Customer Review: How to work around mean old P&G and enjoy your great filter
Summary: 3 Stars

PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

Customer Review: not good
Summary: 1 Stars

When my stainless steel Pur faucet-mount filter started malfunctioning two-and-a-half years after purchasing it, Proctor & Gamble wisely made good on the device's 3-year warranty by swiftly sending me a $50 coupon for a replacement. They weren't being nice; no, they were protecting the stream of revenue they had derived from my purchasing their costly filters, several of which remained in my cupboard, so I was on the hook for a new filter, even though I knew better filtration systems exist.

I spent the $50 on an overpriced replacement (this one) and some filter cartridges. The new one sucks, bad. After about six months, the brittle plastic developed a crack in the same spot everybody else has been complaining about, and now it whizzes all over the place when I use it. So now, as before, I will be contacting Proctor & Gamble about a replacement, use up the rest of the filters, and lay down some dough on a simpler and more reliable Berkey system.

**UPDATE: Efforts to obtain a replacement this time around have been unsuccessful, due to changes to the customer service website and 1-800 number that have removed any reference to product warranties. I tried and tried, but the information is no longer there. This is typical, greed-driven, linear reptilian corporate reasoning: market a useful product that produces a regular revenue stream through the sale of consumable accessories (i.e., the filters,) then start cutting corners in the manufacturing process and customer support when your customer base gets big enough. After all, the rubes are locked into the system because they're sitting on piles of spare filters, right? Sure, as long as they don't migrate to another product, of which there are several appealing ones.

Customer Review: Pure and simple

I picked up one of these (FM3333) for my office. One thing that caught my eye is that it included a 2-stage filter. We have used a single-stage on-tap filter by another maker in the past, but it clogged up too quickly, so having a filter that could trap sediment was an important consideration.

The filter holder installed on the faucet effortlessly without any tools. Our faucet has exterior screw threads, so the faucet adapter included in the package wasn't needed.

The filter itself took a little extra effort to insert into the filter holder. It seemed to be a very tight fit (but not an improper fit).

Filtered water comes out the bottom not really in a stream or a spray, but somewhere in between. It comes out at a slower rate than unfiltered, but I expected that. It's an adequate rate, not a trickle by any means.

Controlling the filter couldn't be simpler or more pleasant. Tip it backwards to bypass the filter, tilt it straight up again to filter again. The tilting action feels very smooth, no feeling of cheap-plastic friction.

Another nice feature is the gauge that shows roughly how much use is left before the filter needs to be changed. It's purely mechanical, no batteries necessary.

I recommend the Pur without hesitation.

Customer Review: Surprisingly flimsy

This does a great job of filtering water. I can taste the difference. However, the poor quality of this product leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

After 2 months of use (just after the 1st filter change), the aerator at the non-filtered outlet began to leak badly, spraying water horizontally. The leak got worse and worse, and I continually tried to patch it up with teflon tape, rubber gaskets, and eventually I resorted to foil and duct tape. Eventually the aerator shot off, revealing that the plastic holding the aerator on to the rest of the unit had cracked and degraded. The unit no longer leaks or sprays water horizontally, but unfiltered water now rockets out unimpeded, and sprays water everywhere after hitting the bottom of the sink.

It is usable for now, and I hope it lasts long enough to use my remaining cartridges. I have no plans to purchase another unit and I will be exploring other brands that get better reviews for durability.

The sad part is that the PUR 3 stage filters seem to be of high quality and I did enjoy the water that they produce. However, none of PURs faucet mounts appear to be of any quality, and it is a shame that a good filter can't be used due to shoddy design and construction issues of another part.

Customer Review: Surprised at the Bad reviews

I'm surprised at all the low ratings that this device has gotten. I suppose I'm an easy to please fellow but if this Pur water filter lasts me 6 months, I will believe that I have gotten my moneys worth. I live in the city and it is tiresome lugging around gallon bottles of water from the store. I found myself rationing water because I did not want to go to the store.

One filter lasts me a good 2-3 months, easily. I really only use it for drinking, sometimes for ramen noodles. It has saved me many a trip to the store and has been easy on the pocket book. $12 a filter which does hundreds of gallons of water or $1.25/gal for distilled water (buying spring i.e. tap, is a great mystery to me). If the unit breaks, I'll buy another one. It's ~$25 and it comes with a filter. Puts it at around $13 for the head unit. Just pretend a filter costs $3-$4 bucks extra and get another faucet mount when it breaks.

I've always been annoyed at the slow rate of the gravity filtered purifiers like the pitchers. Way too slow, empties way too fast, and is a pain when you find yourself wanting a glass of water and you've found that the pitcher is empty. I'll take the added costs of replacing the faucet mount.
