Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400B

Customer Review: Convient and Useful item
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have hard city water at my house which I notice quit frequently has a strong chlorine smell. The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount completely eliminated the chlorine smell and taste from my water. The fact that it's on my faucet makes it very convenient to quickly have drinking water available at any time. I received the PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount as an Amazon Vine item but had the option between this one and the Vertical mount . I choose the horizontal mount as my sink faces a bar top and didn't want the vertical mount to show above my bar top.
Installation was extremely easy. I had to take the end cap off my faucet , place the filter into the Pur mount and click the Pur mount to my faucet. There! That was it.
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount does not require all your water to go through this. For every day use other than drinking water (washing your hands, cleaning dishes etc) the water doesn't go through the filter there is has a black lever on the side when you want to switch the flow of water to go through the filter system. Just don't expect the water flow to be the same since it has to go through the filtering system. As the water filters the volume of water is reduced by nearly half.
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount significantly reduces the smell and taste of chlorine from my water
The PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount made out of hard plastic covered with chrome so I'm not sure how sturdy this device is. A silly observation and not one which affected my rating but my kitchen design is oil rubbed bronze so this chrome color sticks out like a sore thumb. It would be nice if there were more color options than chrome, stainless steel and white since it's an item which can't be hidden.

Customer Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

One word: shoddy. I have had the former style for 3 years. Even after reading similar negative reviews of that model, I still bought it. It was trouble free for those 3 years and provided great tasting water. The only complaint I had was that because the unit was plastic (with a not-so-real chrome finish), it was difficult to remove water spots and hard water stains without removing the plastic coating. Sadly, about a week ago it started leaking where it joins the faucet. Apparently some of the rubber inside had degraded and was allowing water through. It tore off as I attempted to remove it. I'm just glad I got just over 3 years out of it when most reviewers suggested a year would be the norm.

So, after reading all the negative reviews of the new model, I chose to ignore them (mostly because I still have 5 filter cartridges left) and bought the new one. I like the look of it better, and I like the concept of snapping it on and off to replace the cartridges. The rubber fitting went on easily and there were no leaks when I turned on the water (without the unit attached). However, once I snapped on the unit and turned the water on, it leaked where it "snaps." When I flipped the lever for filtered water it leaked even more profusely and even started spraying water all over the place. I took the unit off and no more leaking. My conclusion is that the seal, where the unit joins the faucet, simply isn't water tight. It's not even something I can overlook because the price is reasonable. At the moment (until I can return the product), I have to drape a towel over it to avoid the spraying.

I'll exchange it for another one and hope I have better luck with the next one. It's a relatively simple filter system, and I'd think the product engineers could figure this out--unless of course they're the ones who even BP wouldn't hire to stop a leak...which isn't saying much.

Should I have better luck with the next one, I'll update my review.

Customer Review: PUR Vertical vs Horizontal 3-Stage Filters
Summary: 3 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I gave both types a try for about a month, and came away with a conclusion that it's much less hassle to just use a filtration pitcher, like Brita. Sure, with a pitcher, you have to fill it up, so there's definitely more work, but you never have an ugly, YES, ugly and also pretty big attachment on your faucet.

The bad part of the design is the fact the instructions tell you to take off the PUR filter if you need better access to the sink and the faucet... BUT.. when you take it off, the aerator comes away with the unit, so you're left with a full-on stream of water, which I didn't like at all. So it was either use the sink 100% as is with the PUR installed, or take it off completely, and get the regular aerator on.

Both types were chrome color, but it's just plastic coated in chrome, so I totally agree with reviewers that it will be breaking after any meaningful use time, 1 year plus.

In the bathroom... I liked the vertical more than horizontal. Horizontal would not even fit on the bathroom faucet. All bathroom faucets are alike, have short necks, and PUR filter is just not designed well for the type. It's because of the filter cylinder, no matter which type I used, it was either hitting the back of the sink [horizontal] or the faucet levers when I tried to get water [vertical].

In the kitchen it was much easier to get them installed, and they are interchangeable, so I could try both easily. Again, I like the vertical a little better because of the access to the back of the sink.

Overall, I think it's a good, but poorly executed idea. Stick with your pitcher for now until better designs come along.

Customer Review: This One Works
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros:
- Excellent at removing Iron (but you go through filters faster)
- Except for Brita this is the cheapest filtration system you can buy
- Saves money over buying bottled water
- Saves space over having a water cooler
- Convenient: don't have to lug bottled water into the house, make sure the bottles are out or take them to the store for exchange
- Stays Clean: nice shiny chrome finish hasn't tarnished or gotten sun fade
- sturdy - ONLY THE CHROME METAL MODEL - PUR FM-9400 3 Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount with Filter Chrome
- Filters last for 2 months (4 person household) or 100 gallons (green flashing light), most of the time unless there has been a water line check.
- Filters are easy to replace best price at Amazon 6 pack lasts for the year

Cons:
- It attaches to the end of your faucet: IF YOU have a faucet that the sprayer is also the faucet you can't use this, I know that is a 'duh' statement, but you would not believe how many of my friends have complemented me on how good my pasta tastes and then I have to tell them they have to buy the more expensive under sink model. Also this reduces the clearance between your faucet and the bottom of the sink and may obstruct other sink activities that you currently take for granted. Could not fill directly my tall pasta pot.
- DO NOT FILTER HOT WATER!
- Not good if you have a constant "On" water softener (yep another 'duh' moment)
- The plastic models break / fade/ and if sunlight comes through your kitchen window and shines on the faucet - the white ones change color.

I've had Bottled , under the sink, out of a pitcher, filtered from the fridge, distilled,

For price, taste, health, and ease of changing filters this has been the best. No complaints about filtering speed I let my Brita pitcher hold it for me in the fridge.

Customer Review: Not useless like everyone says it is...

I've been using this faucet purifier for over 3 weeks now and regularly fill my gallon water pitcher and random 20oz water bottles multiple times throughout the week. I don't understand why some people can't get this to work right. I installed it by hand, no extra tools needed like someone claimed, and it hasn't leaked once. Not one drip at all. If you have hard water, like in NY, this filter will clog quickly because it is not made for hard water purification. If you are filtering sewage, it will probably clog quickly. I have no idea how to find out if you have hard water, but apparently I don't.

I live in central PA and after three weeks of nearly 2+ gallons a day it is going strong. It took the chlorine and odor taste and smell out of the water perfectly. It tastes great and I have no complaints.

It takes me 20 seconds to fill up a 20oz bottle...not forever like some posts would suggest. Of course it will reduce the water pressure, it is "filtering" it.

To be fair, it is not chrome, but a chrome finish on a plastic part. However, it says it is a "chrome finish" on the box. It is sneaky advertising, but it says it on the box.

I don't know why people think this product sucked. As long as you can turn something by hand clock wise, you're ready to go. There are only at max 3 possible steps to the installation equation. I had it on and working within 5 minutes and I don't have a degree in mechanical engineering. It worked fine for me and I am glad I bought it.

Update: I have now had this product long enough to replace the filter, almost two months. Replacing the filter was simple and easy. Pop the new one in and you're set. I figured out how much water I filter and it came close to what the manufacturer said I would get. Two months later and this product is still working fine with great tasting water. No leaks at all. Works fine as it should.
