Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400BCustomer Review: Great Alternative to a Filtering Water Pitcher Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The PUR water filtration system attached to my kitchen faucet in about a minute. I did glance at the instructions but this installation is very straightforward. I unscrewed the filter screen from the faucet, hand tightened the adapter and snapped on the filtering unit. Mine did not leak, but if I encounter any problems I will update the review. The box front says "NEW Easy One-Click Installation" so it appears the unit has been redesigned, hopefully to address some of the problems others have written about.
The ability to simply flick a switch and go from tap to filtered water at the kitchen sink has made life easier. Although I have a refrigerator that filters water, it is awkward to use with anything but a drinking glass. I do a great deal of canning and any water in the recipes must be filtered. Trying to fill a quart measuring cup in an area designed for a drinking glass is annoying, and sloppy. Additionally, one of my dogs recently developed a serious health issue and filtered water is a must. Filling the dogs' water bowl entails first filling glasses of water and pouring them in. I was considering buying a filtration pitcher, but this faucet mount system is so much more convenient. And, the unit isn't in a fixed position, it swivels, so there is flexibility for whatever is being filled.
Although chrome colored plastic rather than metal, the unit looks attractive. This is a reasonably priced unit and comparable to a pitcher filtration system. But unlike a pitcher, the faucet mount doesn't need to be stored, thus saving space either on the counter or in the refrigerator. And, the water tastes great.
Customer Review: How to work around mean old P&G and enjoy your great filter Summary: 3 Stars
PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack
Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.
Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.
The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.
I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.
Customer Review: Pur pur fm-9400b: Pops off after awhile Summary: 1 Stars
first of all this is for the recently advertised vertical mount pur faucet that shows a lady's hand popping the filter on the tip of the faucet and hearing it "snap" on. i dont how these other reviews got on here but amazon needs to fix it. disregard any reviews before 2010 at least, as this filter, as far as i know, wasnt released until the summer 2010.
i have had this filter for about 3-4 weeks. this past week and today i have watched the filter literally pop off and launch into the sink. i thought what was happening was it was somehow unscrewing itself from the swivel action, so i tightened the black mounting tip on the edge of the faucet mouth a lot harder. tonight while trying to make myself a glass of water, i turned on the water and it launched breaking my glass. i tried screwing it back on and running tests and each time it popped off. upon close inspection i noticed that the threading inside the black mounting tip had worn down. since the only time i screwed on the black mounting tip was the initial install and the incidents where it popped off (two times). it doesnt make any since that im seeing wear n tear in threading that i would expect to see after a year or so. i also suspect that possibly the water pressure is too high, but dont they test these things at different pressure levels? i gave it a one star because it cant be salvaged and i cant utilize the filter. i threw out the old pur filter (which these reviews on here seem to be based on) because it started cracking and leaking, but at least it lasted for 2 years.
im not sure if i can return this item to the store i bought it at, or if i contact pur themselves. i will let you all know when i can!
oh after some reviewing it looks like i have the horizontal mount, the one that looks like the filter holder is laying down vs standing upright.
Customer Review: Simple, easy to use, good for bad water. Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is one of the few filter that can actually tame my well water. I have a lot of issues with sulfur, which normal filters have problems screening out. After the water passes through my outdoor softener and filters, it still smells awful and tastes sharply of rotten eggs. Not something you want to get used to. This takes care of water I use for boiling, coffee or tea. I keep a pure pitcher in the fridge just for cool water. Between these two units my water is more than tolerable.
Previous versions of this unit did not fit snugly on my faucet. They leaked, cracked and were impossible to work around. All my dishes get done in the sink. Having something jammed in the way is a hassle, especially when you can't count on a good seal twice in a row once you remove it. This unit turns easily, stays out of the way, and does not leak. Ever. It is also much easier to remove and re-seat on the faucet as it just snaps into place.
Other reviewers have reported problems with leaks. My faucet is fairly simple, does not have much of an arch and the pipe is fairly narrow. It sits over an extra large industrial style sink that has plenty of room on both sides. I believe because my faucet is likely newer and more narrow than average it works best with this model.
The life of the filter is a huge improvement over the last one I tried. It's been active for a month and the light is still green after heavy use. This, the fit and the efficiency of this unit have sold me on Pur once again.
Customer Review: Cannot handle water pressure... Summary: 1 Stars
or much of anything else. Attaching this unit is incredibly easy. However, if you actually want to USE the unit, then the fun stops there.
Everything about this unit is cheap. It's billed as being the "stainless steel/chrome" model, but as one quickly realizes that refers only to the color. Even just out of the box the cheap plastic housing on this ridiculously over-priced (it should be $15) purifier was clearly not put together well: the sides didn't even touch each other where they were clearly supposed to come together. The only actual metal on the whole thing is contained in the adapters for getting the unit to mount to your sink.
Once I got the filter on (about 10-15 minutes from opening the box), the thing leaked everywhere. Not a subtle, small leak: EVERYWHERE. Where the unit connects to the faucet, where the knob is that allows you to switch between filtered and unfiltered water, and a special note: this thing cannot handle water pressure well. It slowed the flow down so much that the water was leaking heavily around our faucet handle as well. Granted, that's not the unit's fault it's our lousy sink's fault, but do be aware that if you have heavy water pressure this unit will most likely be a problem. (Note: before someone writes a comment about "you just have too much water pressure and that's why this "great" unit didn't work," I'd like to point out that even with the water barely flowing it still leaked at the point where it meets the faucet and where the knob for switching is).
Do yourself a favor and don't get this unit: on the off chance that yours actually works that's great, but don't risk it if you haven't already.
