Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400B

Customer Review: Good hardware, better water than Brita
Summary: 5 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
For about the past 10 years I've been using Brita pitchers, and faucet mounts to purify the water in my house. I was always pleased with the quality of the water from them, but since my Brita faucet mount was getting pretty old (and dirty!), I decided to give the Pur a try. So far, I've been extremely pleased. It took me longer to get the old Brita mount off than it did to install this one (the video here isn't a lie, it literally just snaps on, and seems sturdy). I'm pretty sure that in the newest model they have fixed the problem with the faucet falling off that others reviewers have reported (mine seems EXTREMELY sturdy). Anyways, I live in an area where the water definitely needs purification, and I can say without a doubt that water from the Pur faucet tastes much "better" (insofar as water can taste "good") to me than out of the Brita faucet.

The hardware quality is nice, and the chrome seems like it will be easy to wipe clean and keep new-looking. The only complaint I have about the hardware is that the filtered water pressure is not very high, so it takes longer to fill a glass of water than it did with my Brita faucet mount. But since the water is much better tasting it's worth the extra couple second wait. To sum things up, if your a longtime Brita user (like I was), or if you're just looking to buy your first water filtering system, the Pur faucet is definitely the way you want to go. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: bad system
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had purchased multiple PUR water filtration systems. (Note the words multiple and systems as this should give you a hint towards my sincere displeasure.) The PUR water filtration system's engineering and design are at best juvenile.

From my personal experience and reading the multiple reviews proffered via the Internet shows my conclusions are correct. PUR needs to spend more money on engineers and designers and less on stockholders and marketshare with the hopes of making a product that will force consumers like me to NOT send their water filtration system (along with the resulting need to purchase their filters) to the local recycler or at worst, the local landfill.

The one system I have found to be the best for engineering, design, ease of use, and reliability is the 4 Phase system from DUPONT. I personally have the Deluxe Faucet Mount 200 Gallon Filter Life Microban system, of the WF-FM350 series.

After many "a trial and error" with the PUR system, DUPONT is by far the best!

The initial cost (39$) I felt was more than reasonable based first and foremost on reliability. The replacement filters (individually at 14$ - I have never found the need to buy multiple replacement packs) has been also more than reasonable because it filters (excellently) 200 gallons of water (I use filtered water for cooking and beverages). This also means I do not use bottled water. I fill my own beverage containers with filtered water from my DUPONT system. I reuse these containers meaning no "bottled water" containers end up in the landfill.

Hopefully someone out there is listening (PUR. Are you there?)

Customer Review: Okay so far

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I've been using this faucet filter for 4 weeks. I will update if something goes wrong and my opinion changes, but so far, so "pretty good." It has not leaked so far.

It is easy to install. For ease of use, my comparison is the large PUR in-fridge container, which takes forever to filter. This is quick and on-demand with no waiting time, so I like that. I still use a glass bottle in the fridge to have cold clean water; this is tap-temperature, obviously.

It's a bit inconvenient when filling, rinsing, or washing pots, pans, and baking trays in the sink; it gets in the way and tends to get knocked off easily. Taking it off every time I want to use the faucet for one of these tasks is simple, but I do those things so often that I just deal with the possibility that I'll knock it off the faucet every so often.

In general, I think the best long-term value in water filtering--for homeowners--is probably a whole-house filter, especially if minerals in the water affect skin, hair, clothes-washing, life of boilers, water heaters, etc. For drinking/cooking water only, the best option is probably an under-sink filter going to a dedicated sink faucet. I had one of those in a previous house with better water. I haven't made the investment in either of these yet, but it's something I should do. In the meantime, I prefer this to a container filter.

Customer Review: Just Don't Expect This to Last For More Than One Year and Probably Less
Summary: 4 Stars

This plastic unit like those before it won't last long - maybe one year. And then the gaskets will be worn and water will spray out from several places.

Caution: this unit is not made to withstand manipulation with the hands other than to twist the knob on the right, otherwise it usually falls off the faucet. There is only one small piece holding this unit to the faucet and it is fragile.

Pros:
* Price. Why get the more expensive stainless steel plated one when the thing won't last anyway?
* The filters are available in larger boxes now and are cheaper per unit. That makes this complimentary item more worthwhile.
* Considering how the price of gasoline might rise all over again, delivered water is potentially not a good long-term solution.
* This is not a big investment or long-term commitment. When it starts to leak, pitch it.
* Water flow is much improved from the mounts available just a year or two ago.

Cons:
* It won't last all that long. You'll know when it starts to leak.
* It falls off the faucet quite frequently due to the fragility of its grip onto the faucet.
* It hangs down from the faucet, stealing valuable sink space.
* Water flow is somewhat restricted although not nearly as bad as units sold just a year ago.
* It's ugly looking.
* If you like cold water, you have to refrigerate your filtered water and that's another step.

I'd like this drinking water solution more if I had a higher faucet and if I didn't have to keep reattaching it to the faucet when it falls off.

Customer Review: Very good water filter, but there are flaws!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The filter package includes a mount, filter and adapters to suit your faucet. The filtered water tastes good and according to the manufacturers certificate, it removes particulate matter, pesticides, heavy metals etc. The filter mount also has an indicator that says when to change the filter. I don't know if it's just a timer or it actually measures water quality. The unit is relatively easy to mount. You just hand screw the adapter to your faucet (after removing the aerator) and then you can 'click' mount the unit to the adapter. The by-pass switch is easy to operate and works fine. No leaks so far for us... The water tastes good as well - Pur has a mineral bed through which the water passes.

- The faucet adapters and the filter mount all are made of plastic and it does feel a bit flimsy (dont be fooled by the 'chrome' product name). With the weight of flowing water, the unit does swivel a bit. so durability is a question for the price tag. (For example, our Culligan water filter has metal mounting adapter and heavy duty plastic filter holder; It also automatically switches back to 'by-pass mode when you close the faucet).
- The package I received was missing the washers, but I could get one from my local hardware store (Actually the washers are preinstalled in the adpaters as opposed to what's mentioned in the instructions!)
