Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400BCustomer Review: Fool Me Twice? Summary: 1 Stars
I'm not sure what else I can add to what other negative reviews have said, except "ME, TOO!" The first horizontal filter I bought worked like a dream -- for about two months. Then the black plastic adapter malfunctioned, the entire filter plunged into the sink and broke glassware, and when I tried replacing/re-seating the filter on the faucet, water sprayed all over the floor and countertop. I tried re-attaching it several times, until I realized that the threading on the adapter was simply worn -- in less than 90 days. I called the PUR 800 service number (not available on weekends, of course), and they sent a new one. This one has lasted less than 2-3 mos., as well. It broke the other night. This time, the filter again detached, but the adapter also came out with it! And remains stuck in the filter. It cannot be unscrewed from the body or re-attached to the faucet, no matter what I tried.
The reason that this is such a disappointment -- aside from the original wasted money -- is that I've used the vertical models for years -- first, in my apartment, and subsequently in my current house. If the problem is water pressure, the vertical filters should have malfunctioned, as well. This "upgrade" that caught my eye simply has poorly designed/manufactured parts. The filter itself works wonderfully, the design idea is great for saving space -- but only if it can stay attached!
I may just have to go back to the Culligan I tried several years ago.
Customer Review: pur water Summary: 2 Stars
This is the 3rd pur faucet mounted water filter we have had. It lasts about a year before it needs replacing because of leaks. I am trying to not turn the water on so much with this one to see if it is high water pressure that makes the gasket deteriorate so fast. Despite the lack of longevity with these units, I keep buying them because they really work. Tap water tastes great when filtered this way. The actual filters last a couple of months depending on how much you filter the water. We only filter it for drinking water and for coffee french press. It is the gasket for unfiltered water that goes; no leaks for the actual filtering part. All in all it does what it's supposed to do although it would be nice if the gaskets could be replaced without buying the whole unit every time.
February 2010. Well, it finally broke beyond repair, and I'm debating whether to go for another, which would be number 4. The gasket lasted longer this time (over a year) as we tried not turning on the water to full pressure. But the plastic (chrome colored) housing cracked around the gasket and the leaks have become intolerable again. I think Pur has pushed this customer's loyalty a little too far and so I will consider all alternatives first. I can't really recommend this anymore because it is really overpriced for the cheap materials used. A metal one would last for years, which is probably why Pur makes these out of plastic-- so they break.
Customer Review: Good water, product doesn't last Summary: 2 Stars
I've owned two of these Pur water filter systems in the past two years. Foremost, the product is made of plastic and the outer casing is very thin and easy to chip or crack. The product does hang down from the faucet, so if you will be using any large pots, plan on hitting the filtration system multiple times (possibly chipping or cracking the plastic). The filter does a good job filtering the water. I can't notice a difference between Pur filtered water and most bottled. That said, this filter is not meant to last long. The mounting nut/o-ring assembly that connects the unit to the faucet has failed on both of the Pur filters I've owned. With my most recent filter, this has happened within a year of buying it new. The o-ring assembly used in the connection seems brand specific and the replacements I've purchased from plumbing supply stores don't work. Maybe there's some other o-ring inside the assembly that failed? From other reviews here on Amazon and elsewhere, this connection assembly and o-ring failure seems to plague these Pur filters.
Now that I need to buy a new filtration device, I'm going to look at other brands. If you decide to buy one of these Pur filters, though, I'd recommend never purchasing a replacement filter. When it's time to replace the filter, just buy a whole new unit. It'll cost only a few dollars more and will save you from having water spray all over your kitchen as a result of a failed o-ring.
Customer Review: Easy install, easy to use, somewhat slow flow rate Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My tap water is generally pretty good, but there are times during the year when there's an off taste to the water. So, I started using a water filter system (the Clear2O pitcher). It works well, but there are times when it would be great to get filtered water right from the tap.
The Pur filter installed very easily - took about 2 minutes total, and the process is straightforward. I didn't have any leaks - I have heard (but can't say for sure) that this "one click" install is a redesign to avoid the problems many people have reported in older reviews regarding leaks. Knock wood, it will stay leak free.
The unit is plastic with a chrome finish. Not all that elegant looking, and I do have concerns about how long the finish will last considering the unit is plastic.
The water tastes great - same as I have been getting with the Clear 2O.
The downside of a faucet mount is that it is slower to filter. I've gotten spoiled with the speed of the Clear 2O, and found the filter speed on the PUR a bit annoying. On the other hand, it's easier to use - just turn on the tap and you're in business.
So far so good - hope it stays that way.
Customer Review: No Problems Here Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure why I feel the need to defend this product. I'm no Pur loyalist by any means. I was happy with my Brita pitcher but wanted to try something more convenient.
After 3 months I have no problems whatsoever. A few things to keep in mind and this by no way accuses anyone with problems they did something wrong.
1. Tighter does not mean better. When any directions say hand tighten it's there for a reason. Over tightening will in time strip and push the threads down from the pressure switching back and forth. It's exactly what happens as seen on the videos from frustrated people.
2. It's always a good idea to use some teflon tape especially with the plastic threads. It will help with the seal and enable you to hand tighten the adapter without trying to 'Herc it'. (it's a saying we use to tell anyone not to over tighten what their working on. Herc = Hercules).
3. Pur gives you 4 different adapters. On a trip to the hardware store and remembering some of the reviews here I bought an adapter for one of the other 'adapters' Pur supplies. If something happens to my adapter I have a backup on hand. Depending on your faucet ( I have a Moen, just the $68 model from HD. You may be able to find a metal adapter ($3, 4 bucks) for your Pur adapter at Lowes or Home Depot. I did. Otherwise a specialty hardware store may have something to fit.
