Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome FM-9400B

Customer Review: Water tastes better, but takes getting used to...
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This filter was easy to install and use-- you basically just screw it onto the end of your faucet, then push down the black lever on the side when you want filtered water. It's definitely more convenient than dragging in bottled water, and the taste is very good. One thing you don't want to do is run hot water through the filter-- this will kill it pretty much instantly, and the instructions do tell you not to do that. Filter life will vary according to the quality of water you have in the first place, but I don't notice a difference in taste after nearly a month of use. Replacement filters are a very good value, especially compared to some filtering pitchers I've seen.

Two drawbacks are that filtered water comes out more slowly, and putting this on the end of your faucet reduces the amount of space in your sink. Pots, pitchers and other dishes you used to rinse easily under your faucet may not fit under the tap like they used to, especially if you didn't have a lot of sink space to begin with. The only thing better would be an under sink filter, but for ease of use and great tasting results, it's easy for me to give this product a solid 4 stars.

Customer Review: A $7 pair of pliers from Home Depot stopped the leaks
Summary: 5 Stars

We've owned three of these now over a period of five years and counting. We mostly discard the filter once the plastic starts cracking and chipping (typically about two years, your mileage may vary). It has worked great for us overall. I see a lot of negative reviews mentioning leaks. We've had some issues with leaks, but I think I've solved the problem finally. I would always hand-tighten the filter when mounting it. After a few months, it would start leaking. Then I would try tightening some more (still by hand) and the leak would reduce to a dribble and we would live with that. When our newest filter started to leak, I happened to have on hand adjustable pliers from Home Depot that can go wide enough to fit the mount. I gave it a quarter turn and that was it, no more leaks. It's been more than a month now. We used a Brita faucet-mount filter before the Pur and that leaked too.

I think you cannot give a filter a negative grade based on leaks unless the reason is obviously shoddy manufacturing. A filter will necessarily create back pressure and the water will then look to get out from the nearest seam. If the mounting is not watertight, you will have a leak. Where the manufacturers go wrong is in not informing users that they need to use a tool to install it. They want it to seem like anybody can install the system. So they don't mention the words wrench or pliers in their literature.

Customer Review: Trash
Summary: 1 Stars

I've had a few of these. Even hearing the stories of other people who installed it right away and it leaking didn't deter me. They always seem to work fine, but a month later it all goes horribly wrong. The first one we got, the mounting cracked and would no longer connect to the faucet. I thought "hey, it's a fluke, I'll get another one." Second one, the *plastic* adapter threads wore down and the unit would just drop off the faucet into the sink. I emailed support, and although it took them a few weeks, they shipped out a new set of adapters (for free, thankfully). The new adapter works great to this day, but last week the body of the unit itself cracked almost all the way around, and just sprays out water in all directions when trying to use it.

Pur saves costs by using cheap plastic parts. Their filters are junk because they'd rather save a few cents per unit than create a product that's actually useful. There are many like me who just accept it and buy a new one. That's what they bank on. No more though. I'm going to get a Culligan FM-15A Level 3 Faucet Filter.

I'm sick of Pur and their horrible quality. I will never by another Pur faucet filter again, or any of their products for that matter.

To their credit, the water it gives you is great when it works.

Customer Review: Water Seems Pure, but the Hardware is Poor
Summary: 2 Stars

I've been using these PUR water filter units for several years. I like the convenience and the quality of the water, but I'm getting very tired of the problems with the hardware itself. This turns out to be quite an expensive unit because the faucet mount has never lasted more than three filters for me.

Another issue is that the filters really don't last very long. In just a short time the "green" led will start to flash yellow and then red. I usually keep it on red for as long as possible to get as much out of it as I can. But the water flow will progressively lessen over time until a filter change is essential.

I've had leaky units that needed replacement. I've had units break right off the faucet because of a blast of water pressure when the faucet is first turned on. And my last unit had such a problem unscrewing the cap for filter replacement that I broke the unit off the faucet when trying to twist it. Another $40 down the drain.

Even with all of the replacements, it is probably still cheaper than bottled water, but not by much and I'm sure getting tired of having to buy another unit every 4-6 months. Usually the unit doesn't last much longer than the two filters included in the mount kits I buy.

Overall, I would give this product two stars (instead of one) because the water does seem purified through the 3 stage filter.

Customer Review: Water takes like close to nothing
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I want my water to taste like nothing, so in this regard, the PUR FM-9400B 3-Stage Horizontal Faucet Mount Chrome is wonderful. As a user of PUR faucet mount filters for over a decade, I still think the quality of the housing system is less than perfect. On the other hand, it is a new design and if I ever want to snap off the filter to make more room in the sink, I have that option. I do prefer a stronger water pressure and doubt that the system will last for a very long time if one removed it frequently, so it's more likely that it will remain fixed, as have my previous PUR filter systems. I trust the light which signals time for a filter change, but do not immediately change the filters when the light changes. Being plastic, I do not wash the system with abrasives, but simply wipe it down every evening after cleaning the kitchen. The chrome finish has shown no problem and my product has yet to leak. In my experience, however, I've found that after changing the filter 3 or 4 times, I need a replacement PUR system because it does leak terribly. Customer service at PUR is very accommodating, so be sure to keep your receipt.
