Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700B

Customer Review: fantastic for LIGHT DUTY home use!
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though this product has gotten so many bad reviews, I bought it anyway! For one thing I have used it before and liked it, and another it was cheaper on Amazon than in my local stores. Most of the bad reviews come from cheap skates and confused people trying to make this thirty dollar screw-on purifier do the job of a plumbed-in (in-line) heavy duty household purifying system! Some of the fault definitely belongs to Pur for trying to market it to everyone so they can make huge profits.

1. If you are one of these households with many kids and requires 10 gallons of purified water a day of course this unit will not work and the constant wear and tear will make the unit wear out fast.

2. THE LEAKS that everyone describes where the purifier joins the faucet can be EASILY FIXED with Teflon tape. It's available at any hardware store. Google it to see how easy it is to use. This only applies to the leaks around threaded parts of the faucet and the purifier. Where the purifier twists to its on/off position is another story. Once that leaks, its over. And with regular light duty use it can last a couple of years or more.

3. The NSF Certification/Rating. Look a few reviews below this one for one called "Good at first but breaks after a year" This person mentions this unit's NSF rating of 42 to be aesthetic. Which is a very good thing. It reduces the chlorine taste and odor significantly. But also THIS UNIT IS NSF rated 53 for heavy metals, microbes, pharmaceuticals, and other nasties! Looking at that review it makes it seem that this one is not rated as such.

This is a 3 stage, NSF 42 & 53 rated water purifier. You can't beat the price for the range of things it takes out and it does it instantly at the tap. But figure out your needs first! If you really need a plumbed-in household system spend the money to get it. Don't expect this to do it.

Customer Review: great water, poor design

I bought my first PUR faucet mount about 4-5 years ago. It was a vertical mount that lasted about 2.5 years. Since there is a 5 year warranty I called the company and they quickly and graciously sent me a newer version.

The sent model was a horizontal mount and supposed to be a slightly better mode. It was great for about 9 months, then the housing cracked and water began running down the sides and spraying out slightly. Again I got a replacement. The second horizontal mount lasted less than 6 months before cracking and water spraying all over. The faucet mount had not been hit or impacted in any way . (I live alone, so I am certain of this.) At this point I decided to just send an email to Pur I emailed the company, asking if they had any products that held up without cracking of the housing because I love the filtration itself. When I got no response in over three months, I sent the email out again, and then I received an email with an apology, and informing me that I would be receiving a coupon by mail. The coupon entitled me to buy any PUR product at PUR's expense.

I got another three stage filter system, this time returning to the vertical mount, hoping it would last a couple of years like my first one. It has lasted only a couple of months--through only one filter change--and now every time I turn the water up to a medium flow it shoots out several inches to the right. If I keep the flow slow, the water, instead, runs along the outside of the mount as well as through the mount, mixing potentially contaminated water with the other water. I have tightened the mount and adjusted it, as well. The reality is that the filter portion is pulling away from the mount, allowing some water to leak through the mount and out the side. If I lift the filter up as the water flows, ithe gap is pretty well closed and the water runs more efficiently along its intended course.

Customer Review: Once good, now lousy

As others here, I had this model in white that worked perfectly for more years than I can remember until, one day, the swivel joint blew out. As I couldn't find another of this model at the time, I purchased a horizontal chrome-jacketed one. I was put off with the idiot-light diodes (whose colors were not all that distinctive) instead of a progressive analog meter, but what the hey. Within 4 cartridges, the diodes quit working, so I was left with no measure of the cartridge's status at all. I've been using calendar dates to change cartridges to date, but that's not satisfactory.

Editorial: After reading the reviews here and my own experience, I too am convinced that PUR is just another great company that's fallen victim to the corrosive effects of America's "conglomerate management model" that seeks profit first, marketing second, and puts product last. Find a good brand and model name, buy the company, do no R&D or product improvement, gut the product while maintaining the brand and model names until the company and model name die, then dump the company. That's what P&G, who bought PUR in 1999, is doing to PUR. (And, btw, that's how conglomerates, Wall Street, and relaxation of anti-trust enforcement have destroyed America's manufacturing core in the past 35 years.) For the consumer, that means enormous hidden inflation (over and above the figures cited by government) as formerly long lasting quality products continue to be sold as being the same for the same or higher price, but last only a small fraction of the time and/or do not perform as well - so much for brand and model names. (A former great company because I used their products for decades in the military where their water-purifying products could always be counted on to do the job under any conditions and do it well. That's what led me to their consumer products in the first place.)

PUR Water Filter Review \ Hack

Once, long ago, PUR was a great company with great water filtering technology. I still love their filters! Unfortunately, a big bad company named Proctor and Gamble bought them and messed them over in favor of customer abuse. This was accomplished using two methods. The first method is called 'planned obsolescence' whereby their faucet mount apparatus leak and die briefly after the end of the warranty period. (It didn't used to be that way in the good old days). The second method is called 'timed death' whereby their apparatus lock up their enclosed filters at a preset volume of filtered water, whether the filter is actually used up or not.

Planned obsolescence can be overcome by calling up Proctor and Gamble BEFORE your warranty runs out, and letting them know that your PUR apparatus is squirting water all over your kitchen. Ask them to send you a replacement or a replacement certificate. If need be, call repeatedly asking to speak to the President of P&G, never taking 'no' for an answer. Then take your certificate and get another PUR apparatus. This will provide you with a lifetime for the apparatus more representative of the lifetime of original PUR apparatus. You've cheated no one. P&G's cheat on you has been overcome.

The timed death lockout of your filter is extremely easy to overcome. Pull out the filter from the apparatus. This resets the nasty timing device to zero again. Put your filter back in. TADA! You're done. Your filter will work as before. Note, however, that PUR filters do eventually get clogged with stuff. You'll know when to change it.

I hope that helps everyone restore goodness to the universe. I still love PUR filters better than any other brand and wouldn't be without them. It's P&G's customer abuse that's not worth liking. Shame on you P&G.

Customer Review: Great Product
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used PUR filters for long time, finally time to replace my 6 old faucet mount unit. Read the reviews here and was leery of the new "one click" model. After getting it and installing it in less than 90 seconds, I'm no longer concerned. PUR has fixed everything I didn't know needed fixed from the last unit I bought. Here's the highlights:

-The new design is based on common quick plumbing connects I've used on outdoor products for years. It works. Its easy. You don't need to be a plumber.
-By removing the actual "connecting part" from the base of the unit, it allows the installation to be quick and painless. Install the adapter to the faucet then attach the unit with one click. Perfect design.
-The vertical unit is more space efficient than the horizontal unit I had before, love it.
-Swivel is perfect
-Easy Touch valve...1 finger click to get filtered water (didn't know I needed this until I got it).
-Light weight. Some complained in reviews about "cheap feeling" but by being light it allows PUR to use the quick connect and swivel, which on a heavy unit would require even more complexity. I think its extremely well designed
-Seriously inexpensive. I mean, come on, <$25

My faucet has external threads, so the fitting is very secure and putting it on was as easy as connecting a water hose.

Thank you PUR!

and no, I'm not a company plant, I don't post often but I was very pleased with this product. I think most people buy it, install it and never look back...customers who have problems come here, and are vocal, so it might be distorting the ratings a bit.
