Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700B

Customer Review: Once burned, twice shy?
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought my first PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount almost two years ago, and, after several months, began experiencing the same problems a lot of others have had: a severe leak at the filter indicator (it literally squirted me in the eye!) and pieces of the plastic "chrome" recently broke off at faucet level (I really should have read the warnings/reviews, first, but the same unit in my office environment seems to work okay!)

Anyhow, even once bitten, I ordered and just received my second unit. Why am I possibly repeating my original mistake? Because before the unit started showing serious defects, I had invested heavily in a pricey 6 pack of replacement filters!

Now the second unit is here: Although I followed my original 2008 shipped items path to reorder, the product looks very different! Instead of receiving model FM-3700, I got FM-3700B. Apparently this model is updated and redesigned to possibly eliminate some flaws. For one thing, the unit is fixed vertically, and I don't have to turn it from horizontal to vertical for operation (maybe the repeated motion of cranking it between horizontal and vertical put too much pressure on the unit). Since I don't have a space issue at my kitchen sink, this is okay.

FM3700-B is easier to install, too, with a "one-click" system and tight faucet connections (I had to use plumber's thread seal tape to securely connect the older unit to the faucet without leaking).

"Once bitten, twice shy?" Maybe not shy the second time around, just a lot more jaded and cynical. Still, in the words of the immortal Manilow, "I'm ready to take a chance again."

Customer Review: Easy to install, instant drinking water.

I chose the Pur faucet filter because our water at work tasted funky. I decided to give it a try..

The Pros:
The unit is fairly small and lightweight. Incredibly easy to install. The activated charcoal filter removes odor from sulfur water, I can now drink the tap water that once tasted so bad. As a matter of fact the water now is highly potable! The unit spins 360 around the faucet so it can be pushed somewhat out of the way if you are washing big dishes or need the space. No more plastic water bottles clogging up our garbage bins.

The Cons:
Seems like it is poorly made-plastic and possibly easy to break. (It looks much more matte plasticy than the metal look in the photo). No battery compartment (I think) therefore the led light that lights up when water is filtering may go out and the entire unit may need to be replaced. I would recommend some other type of indicator, or none at all. The filtered water comes out slowly, but this is expected. It's easy to accidentally turn on the filter side just by bumping it when you're doing dishes or washing hands. I'm not sure how long a filter will last, at approximately $10 a pop, I would expect a decent amount of time between replacing. If you are going to make an item out of plastic, I would prefer it to be simple black, instead of "faux chrome."

Customer Review: Pur Lies
Summary: 1 Stars

We picked up a Pur faucet filtration system for my home about six months ago. We also bought quite a few filters. They were very expensive (why does plastic and carbon cost so much?), but we figured that good water was worth it - particularly since we have a little boy.

Our water is city water. It's not bad, but we thought it wouldn't hurt to be a little extra safe. It's just too bad we went with Pur.

The filters are supposed to last for two months or 100 gallons. So far, only one out of TEN filters has actually lasted that long. The rest have died within one to three WEEKS. The water stream quickly became very weak, ending up as mere drops. We were always careful to follow instructions, never ran hot or warm water through the tap...still, no matter what we did the filters died in practically no time at all.

We contacted Pur, and they claimed that our water must be incredibly bad. We don't believe that this is the case. We get city water, and it's analyzed on a regular basis; it's not particularly hard or soft, and nobody we know has ever had any problem with it. We used other filters in the past, and never had this problem. And it's not as if we got a bad batch of filters; we've bought filters from several different stores over a period of months, and they've almost all been awful. Approximately $10 per filter is a decent price if they work as indicated, but when they only last 1/8 as long as claimed, they become a rip-off.

Once we use up our final filter, we'll be looking for a new filtration system. I'll never buy from Pur again.

Customer Review: PUR model FM-3700B
Summary: 5 Stars

When I moved into my new apartment with my fiance, I decided I wanted a faucet-mounted filter to replace my old pitcher filter. From what I read, faucet-mounted filtration systems were a bit better than pitchers, and they seemed a lot easier to use. All the bad reviews almost scared me off, but the bad reviews seemed about the same regardless of brand. My pitcher was a Brita, but I ended up going with this Pur filter because it happened to be on sale for less at the time.

I find the quality of filtration comparable--they both take out the chlorine taste from city water treatment and metal taste from old pipes. They both taste good and should be removing contamination, so I'm happy in that respect. What makes this better than the pitcher filters is the ease of use. The pitchers take so long to fill that it was always a chore--especially so if you lack a hose at your sink and the pitcher has to be wedged under your faucet.

I love that the filter is just short enough to fit under my faucet. I can easily swivel the filter to sit behind the faucet when we're not using the filtered water. The only minor annoyance is that the switch to turn the filter on is so easily flipped that I often bump it without realizing it and get filtered water briefly when I wanted tap, which isn't a big deal. It's probably because I'm not used to it.

It's been a month. I don't understand all the bad reviews. I rarely review products, but was so pleased with this purchase I had to post. I will definitely update in a year (or sooner, if anything goes wrong).

Customer Review: Handy device, easy to install

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I have both the vertical model (this one) and the horizontal model made by PUR. Both were a snap to install (no pun intended) using the snap-on connector. I believe this is a new design for PUR based on what I've read in older reviews. Hopefully, it will prove to be more resistant to the leaks that have plagued older units.

Both the horizontal and vertical models work the same. The only difference is how the filter is positioned. I find the horizontal version works great in the bathroom where the faucet is smaller, and you want a more compact design. I installed the vertical model in the kitchen where it works fine with the larger faucet.

My complaints are the same for both models - the flow rate is not all that great. I've gotten use to the speedy flow rate of the Clear 2O system I've been using, and the PUR is clearly more poky when it comes to throughput. However, it is more convenient to use (the other system uses a hose to hook to the faucet that fills a pitcher).

I'm optimistic about the longevity of the unit, but not so confident that I feel comfortable stocking up on filters as of yet. I'll give it a few months to see how it works before laying in a supply of filters. But, for now, everything is working great and the water taste is excellent.
