Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700B

Customer Review: Works great at first, but these filters do not last. Junk
Summary: 1 Stars

The Pur faucet mounted filter worked great at first. Very easy to install - easier to use than a Brita. Pur claims that their filters are better than Brita at removing contaminants and they're probably right. Pur makes portable filters for hiking that, as far as I know, are rated excellent for emergency purposes. That quality, however, is not there in their filters for home use.

Within about a month the filter developed serious leaks near the top of the unit. Water literally sprays outward at the top and goes everywhere. At first I was going to get the unit replaced. Then I went to a friend's house where they also had a Pur filter on their tap. They had the white model that's identical to the chrome shown here. Their unit was beginning to do the same! Water was leaking out of the top.

Don't bother buying this. All the negative reviews clearly show that Pur has SERIOUS quality control issues with this product.

Pur has lost my business. I don't care if their filters are better at removing contaminants than Brita's, I want something that works. I gave up on the faucet mount system (none of them allow for additional mounted devices such as a portable dishwasher, something I need) and decided to just get the largest size pitcher filter system I could find. I went with Brita. I figure if Pur doesn't care that they're selling defective merchandise and ripping people off then I assume that they don't care that much about their quality control on their other home filtration systems.

Our first Pur faucet mount lasted nearly two years. We are on well water so the build up of minerals caused us to get a new Pur. We selected this one but it was the screw on variety and we've had absolutely NO issues with this filter set up. Where the last one had minor leaks this one has been rock solid...not a drop...and it's been 3 months of hard use.

I do wonder if water pressure IS an issue. First, a house on well water will have much lower water pressure...municipal water pressure is MUCH stronger...to us it's like a fire hose...and second, (and this is important), the filter will only dispense water at a certain rate no matter how much you increase the water pressure. If you add these two factors together I can understand where this connection can be overwhelmed with pressure and leaks will sprout.

My advice for municipal users with high water pressure is to use the filter with only partial pressure. Turn on the water lightly and THEN flip up the Pur upon first use...if you blow it out with water pressure I'm not sure you can get it back. Again, it only dispenses at a certain rate no matter how much water pressure is behind it...so...be gentle...if you've never experienced well water pressure you'd be surprised at how low it is...so...again...be GENTLE...you'll get the highest rate of flow this filter was meant to produce with very little pressure.

This is one of the few times I don't envy people with high water pressure...this pur has been great for us.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It was easy to install. It came with 4 different kinds of attachment for various types of faucets. I have to remove the tip from my faucet before I can install it. Took me just 5 minutes to set it up.

It works very good. You have to let it flow for 5 minutes to make the filter ready for use. At first the flow is somewhat slow, but after letting it run as mentioned above, it goes on pretty smoothly. The water is clear and does not taste anything metallic or artificial.

The filter housing can be pushed to rotate out of the way if you need to, like when you need to wash your hands or do some dishes. The switch from filtered water to plain water is just an easy flick of the switch. It also has an LED indicator to let you know when is time to change the filter. You can buy the PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack in 6-pack.

My only concern is how long it can hold. I only own this for a week. I will update my review if it fails to perform as it should. Most of the materials are made of plastic. The chrome finish looks really good, very shiny and it looks like real metal until you actually touch it.

Customer Review: Fell apart - don't waste your money

While gently installing this filter, the decorative, chrome colored plastic piece just above the aerator fell off in my hand.

The next day, the chrome colored, plastic, dome cover at the bottom of the filter where the filtered water comes out fell off in the sink without even touching it.

Because I couldn't find the receipt, I repaired my new water filter with some glue.

The cost of the replacement filters is very expensive - triple the cost of the R2C filters of the similar Waterpik filter.

There is a filter change indicator to let you know when to change the filter, and the same mechanism that moves the change filter indicator will shut off your filtered water if you wait long enough, ensuring that you'll run right out to buy an overpriced replacement filter. This happened to me after using the filter for one month. You can get the filtered water flowing again by removing the filter and sticking it right back in. Of course you will have to replace it at some point and can't do this forever.

This product makes it on my long list of inferior, made-in-China products by name-brand companies. You can bet I won't be buying anything with the Pur name on it again. When it's time to buy replacement filters, I will instead be unscrewing this inferior product from my faucet and tossing it into the trash, before it starts leaking (according to the other reviews here)!

Customer Review: believe the reviews

I've had a PUR filter for a year and did not heed the warnings about the cracks and leaks, but alas within two months mine began to crack. And 8 months later there are cracks all over the casing and its leaking around the connection to the faucet.

Right now, in order to use the remaining filters (I bought a 6 pack anticipating longevity,) I am debating if its worth buying another one realizing its more or less a short term investment

My guess is that the cheap plastic casing doesn't stand up to water pressure very well, especially once a filter begins to wear out and thus filters less water; as a result the pressure builds inside the plastic casing. Most users are trying to get the most out of the filters since they are $10+ each. Too bad, because the filtration system itself is excellent - it has reduced odors and metals in my nyc water. So if PUR reps read these reviews - you got one heck of a filter, but one lousy plastic casing - work on it and you'd sell millions more.

UPDATED 10/18/10 - I realized I purchased this on January 28, 2010 and I now have to replace it. Its leaking everywhere with cracks in the casing and now cracked and leaking at the connection to the faucet. I buying the cheapest to use the remaining filters, but there's clearly a major problem with the quality of this item. Again the filtering is amazing, but its casing is "Pur" crap.
