Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR 3-Stage Vertical Faucet Mount Chrome FM-3700BCustomer Review: Worth the money but a little short-lived Summary: 3 Stars
I've owned this for about year, give or take a couple months. While I've had it, it's been pretty good. It recently failed. Like J. Hunter and others, it developed a crack just below the indicator window. It started with a pin-sized spray of water but rapidly worsened.
While I had it, here's how it stacked up:
* The water tasted decent. I thought it compared well ito my Brita pitcher, though the latter was a little better.
* The water flow out the filter was agonizingly slow at first but I eventually stopped noticing.
* To bypass the filter, you tip the entire "bulb" back or forward. It's pretty easy to use.
* This thing had a best aerator I've ever installed on a sink. Ever. It's not a feature I was shopping for and I was really surprised that I cared!
* The filters were awkward to replace. You have to screw off the bottom and use water pressure to eject the old filter. Not terrible but Brita's on-tap unit seems better in this department.
I replaced my Pur filter with a Brita equivalent but that failed in less than 2 days. I'm on the hunt for an alternative to either. If I don't find one soon, I'm OK buying another Pur.
Customer Review: Water flows to a drip after 2 weeks in NY Summary: 1 Stars
On initial use, the water certainly tasted far better than straight from the mains and the unit performed well... for about one week.
The attachment to the faucet was better quality than Brita's version, being metal rather than plastic, however due to water ingress the faux chrome plastic sleeve became unstuck after about a week.
The main problem, however, is that the water flow slowed down considerably after about 2 weeks and was unusable, giving only a very slow trickle, so slow that it dripped back up the faucet!
It says in the instructions that water with a high amount of particles can affect the flow rate, but this is crazy! I had to return this product back to the store. I live in Manhattan, NY if that's any use to any other potential buyers.
I then tried the Pur vertical mount, which still trickled, then Brita's version, which didn't trickle but just sprayed everywhere. My final test is a Clear2O water pitcher... fingers crossed.
UPDATE: The Clear2O water pitcher is fantastic and we've used it every day since I wrote this review. The water tastes very fresh and crisp and the pitcher fills up within seconds.
Customer Review: It works but is too bulky Summary: 3 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The filter works well and provides clean, good tasting drinking water.
I remove it when I am washing dishes because it gets in the way and it is very easy to bump the little lever that makes it work while using hot water for dishes. I have a under sink unit that has a separate faucet but the filters are hard to change (that is why I have been looking for a different type of filter. The water comes out much faster in the under sink unit than the PUR faucet mount and it tastes just as good.
Pros- It is very easy to remove using 1 little buttons to release it.
It filters the water good, the water tastes good.
Filters are easy to change.
cons- the filter unit is too bulky and gets in the way
The water coming out is very slow.
When I remove the unit when washing dishes there is no aerator on the faucet with it removed and the water splashes too much.
Customer Review: A very handy product Summary: 4 Stars
As anyone who lives out West knows, the tap water here is not that greatest. Making tea with unfiltered water is a good way to get scared of whatever is in the water supply because the tea makes it show up in solution. And the taste is really just... not the same as I was used to when I lived in Florida (a state with more rainfall and thus less hard water).
Enter: the PUR 3-stage water filter. Ever since I bought it I've had great-tasting and clear water for my brewing and drinking needs. Even with LA water I've managed to go 4-5 months between changing filters, which usually means I only end up paying ~$40 a year for all the water I can drink--far cheaper than any bottled water, and I have it in the convenience of my own home.
However, after about 2 1/2 years I did get a leak from the indicator window as a lot of other reviewers did. It seems to key to making the filter system last longer is to not turn the tap on all the way, or turn down the water pressure using the knobs below the faucet. Even though I now have a bit of a damaged product, two and a half years is plenty long enough for the product to last, so I'll give it 4 stars.
Customer Review: Review for the newer model Summary: 5 Stars
I don't know what is going on with Amazon. The photos at the top show two different models. PUR did in fact come out with a newer model so I am not sure if THIS particular model is the new one or the old one, even though the description in the product details shows the newer model. It is also not fair to have over 200 reviews for the older model if the item is newer. My review is for the newer model.
The filter works so much better. I, too, like many reviewers, had my first filter for years and years back in the 90s. Recently, I have had no luck. Then, I happened to find this at a local discount retail store before PUR even updated their website, and I am glad to say I did not give up on PUR filters. The newer model allows the filter to simply "sit" in the mount. It creates no pressure inside when the water runs through it while it's closed so the crack does not seem to appear. The switch for the filter water is a tad flimsy, but be gentle with it and you should be all right. I am happy to be able to continue filtering water with PUR because I do believe their filters do a good job making water taste better with less to no contaminants.
