Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR CR-5000 Two-Stage Water Pitcher with Flavor CartridgeCustomer Review: It's OK Summary: 3 StarsI got this pitcher because I love filtered water and my son likes flavored water, and I figured this would be a way to get both of us drinking more water. After about 3 months, I can say it's OK. Not a ringing endorsement, but it's not an abject failure.
I would have to agree with the comments of several other reviewers. The reservoir is fairly small, so if I want to make a (different) pitcher of some drink such as lemonade or iced tea with filtered water, it takes refilling this pitcher 4 or 5 times to get 2 quarts of water. And that means waiting for it to filter each time. I like the size of the actual pitcher because it fits well in the fridge, but can't they make either a smaller or a faster filter that doesn't take up so much of the pitcher room?
Ok, on to the flavor. The filtered water is great. I too wish it could filter out flouride, which I understand is both useless for teeth (flouride works when applying it to teeth; we need flouride treatments, gagging though they are, not to drink the stuff and make it a part of our bodies. What's next, neosporin in our drinking water?) Anyway, I agree that there is an issue with the flavor packages. It's hard to get flavor out of them. The mechanism doesn't work so well. This was a bit of a disappointment. My son likes maximum flavor when he can get it, but either the cartridges don't work well or they run out quickly. We will try just squirting it in the glass.
When he can get flavor, he really likes it. I don't care for it too much. If you look at the ingredients, it's like that polyglycol or whatever stuff that is in a lot of drinks but is indeed synthetic. I much prefer just buying some lime juice or lemon juice and using that, so that's what I end up doing more often. I'd rather that we both drink natural stuff. So, more and more we make spritzers using seltzer, a small amount of juice, and some lime juice, and it's great. But you don't need this for that. So, this is for when I just want a cool, crisp, clean glass of water, no flavor. So, I could have just gotten a regular pitcher without the flavor. They need to come out with some kind of natural flavoring. And a pitcher that can actually distribute it effectively.
Final complaint: the filters are hard to find. But both Brita and Pur seem to do this: they keep changing their pitchers and each one takes a different type of cartridge, so whatever pitcher you get, soon there's a new one out and the old cartridges are hard to find. I shouldn't have to order them online, which is what brought me here in the first place.
