Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR MineralClear Faucet Refill RF-9999, 6 PackCustomer Review: Pur delivers pure water Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using various Pur water filter products for about a decade and have always been pleased with the results, and now with the 6 pack on Amazon, my price has been cut in half! The water in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is generally good campared to many other communities, but what spurred me to use filters was what happens after the water leaves the treatment plant. A friend of mine works for the water-sewer department here. After his first week he went out and bought water filters once he saw what was in the pipes leading to the homes. A dirty little secret the treatment plants do not tell you is the number a leaks in the system allowing for ground water seepage, especially after a heavy rain. I can see it in my bath water. Because of this I am saving up to put a whole house filter on my intake pipe since our skin absorbs alot from showering and bathing. I will still use my faucet filters since I never waste money on dirty bottled water, I refill my own bottles, at a considerable discount of about 90%, and take them to work with me. Also, I water my most delicate indoor plants with filtered water and they seem to be healthier for it. The Pur 3 stage filter is definitely a bargain at these prices and well worth it considering the results.
Customer Review: Good tasting water, short filter lifetime Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this PUR 3-stage filtration system for 4 months now and have gone through a 6pk of filters. So I'm averaging about 1 filter every 2-3 weeks. At first I was upset because the filters are expensive and were advertised for 2-3 months of usage. But our filtered water tastes MUCH better than the normal tap water (and the strong chlorine smell was filtered away) so it seems as though the filters were doing their job. Recently, I received a notice from our town water utility describing the local water system. Apparently none of the town water is filtered, it comes straight from the NYC aqueduct and gets chlorinated, but that's it. The town we live in is fairly old so I imagine the water pipes are quite old. Also, our house is over 100 years old so I suspect that the combination of unfiltered town water + old water pipes is allowing a lot of sediment to clog our PUR filter. I would much rather spend some extra money on filters to ensure clean water than to worry about whether the filters lasts a long time. If a filter lasts a really long time, it seems to me that maybe it's too porous and allows more sediment and chemicals through into the drinking water. I'm no expert but this is my thinking on this issue.

PUR RF-9999-6 3 Stage Faucet Mount Filter, 6-Pack
The faucet mount model is great because it doesn't use countertop space, a plus in my small kitchen. It does deliver fresh, odorless water, and I am able to confirm the filters are doing their job because during the summer months the water develops an odor and off taste (I no longer taste test, I know it's horrible.). When this happens it smells/tastes like the town adds extra chlorine. This fixes the first problem, but creates a different set of problems. Either way, when I switch the filter on - all these problems go away. Under these circumstances we will not get the 100 gallons, but that's okay because I know the filters are working harder. One word of caution - IT IS TRUE, if you run hot water through the filter it will be destroyed. Buying the six-pack with free shipping makes it a deal that's tough to beat. At ten, fifteen or even twenty cents per gallon (on a bad month), plus no bottles to buy, haul or recycle, what a deal.
Customer Review: good taste, but short life. Summary: 3 Stars
I have used it for years in many different places and, generally, think it's a good product.
Other reviewers here are, however, also correct that the Pur cartridge's lifespan is a bit inconsistent - it varies greatly from 2 to 5 weeks. After having water checked by the Environment Control Board in NYC, my experience leaves me with suspicion that the 2-3 months advertised lifespan is practical - the average lifespan is more like 2.5 weeks. I ordered a six-pack from Amazon right after replacing the last cartridge; it ran out shortly after the product was delivered. The company's official FAQ now seems to indicate that each filter lasts only 1-2 months (40 gallons), as opposed to the original advertised claims of 2-3 months (100 gallons).
The automatic Safety Monitor Gauge (aka, ASM indicator), I might add, is totally useless - I've had at least 4 different mounting faucet units; not single one of them reporting any meaningful level of usage.
Now am I the only one to have received Pur cartridges covered with dust (with no cap on the spout) from Amazon?
Customer Review: buyer beware Summary: 2 Stars
BUYER BEWARE: THIS PRODUCT DOES **NOT** APPEAR TO BE A 3-STAGE FILTER. I ordered these based on the amazon description of "3-stage filter." But the product I received looks very suspicious. It is a new "mineral clear" filter, and claims to "replace" previous 3-stage filters. ***However, NOWHERE on the box (or in the documentation) does it claim to ACTUALLY BE a 3-stage filter!!**** What kind of games is PUR playing here??? I checked on their website, hoping to get some explanation, but there is absolutely NOTHING on their website about this "new" replacement product. Even when I search the exact name of the filter, I get NOTHING. If this is indeed a 3-stage filter, why doesn't it say so on the box, or on the documentation in the box?? Is PUR playing games with their product labeling? Is this some sort of cheap knock-off filter?? BOTTOM LINE, THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE THE ULTIMATE 3-STAGE FILTER. MY GUESS IS THAT IT'S A CHEAPER 1-STAGE FILTER. AMAZON NEEDS TO MODIFY THEIR DESCRIPTION OF THIS PRODUCT!!
