Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR MineralClear Faucet Refill RF-9999, 6 PackCustomer Review: My Review of PUR's RF-9999-6 3 Stage Filter cartridges.... Summary: 5 Stars
I know the date of this review is March 16, 2010 ,but I have updated it as of today September 1st 2010. I have been using these filters for over a year now and have noticed that when I lived in Texas where the outside temperature rarely exceeds 100 degrees, the filters were lasting between two to two and a half months. We moved about four months ago here to Southern Nevada and with the Summer Temperatures approaching 120 degrees and above, what is supposed to be cold water coming from out of the tap is extremely warm. This, I noticed has caused a noticable reduction in the life of the filters. I presume that once the summer passes and the temperatures become more "civilized" here in the desert, the life of the filters will substantially increase to what it was back in Texas. Right now in the Mojave Desert heat, the filters only last about a month. I am sure that once the Fall returns and outside temperatures recede below 100, that the life of the filters will return to two to two and a half months.
Customer Review: Not the same quality filter as before, bait and switch. Summary: 2 Stars
I've been using a PUR faucet mount 3 stage filter for 2 years. I have been very happy with it, with the exception of the filter cost. I had been buying them from my local Target store for about $25 for a 2 pack. The water quality was always excellent. But not any more. I recently purchased a 6 pack from Amazon which appear to be a knock-off of sorts. There is some very deceptive wording on the package, it claims to "replace 3 stage filters" but never actually states that the filters in the package are actually 3 stage. I really don't think they are. I believe this because the quality of the water is noticeably worse that all the past filters I've bought(at least 6-10). The level of turbidity is noticeable, unlike in the past when it was crystal clear right from the tap. Other differences I've noticed: the PUR logo looks completely different; the gold foil pouches have no printing on them at all, unlike all past filters. I really feel like I've been duped here, this was no bargain. Caveat Emptor!
Customer Review: Good filter, but not recyclable! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this package of 6 filters b/c of its good price w/out knowing this filter cannot be recycled. There is no doubt that this is a good filter that does its job well. However, nowadays, keeping the environmental problem in mind, I do think that the consumers have to take into consideration the responsibility of the manufacturer to make good products as well as its effort to minimize its harm to the environment. If the company does not take this responsibility into account, the pressure is given onto the consumers. I don't really want to take this kind of pressue. Just having to worry about what to do with this very well made, sturdy piece of plastic and cannot throw it in the recycle bin or send it back to the manufacturer would make me think twice about buying this product again. If Procter & Gamble continues to disregard the need for developing a comprehensive recycle program for this product, I'm thinking about switching to Brita filtration system that does take back their used filters.
Customer Review: I must have an older unit, but I love the way it works Summary: 4 Stars
I first started buying the PUR filters after trying a few different drinking water solutions (brita and others), and I've found the PUR unit and filters to work the best in terms of removing crappy smells and tastes from the local tap water. My unit has no real indicator letting you know the filter is done, the only indication is the water progressively slows down to a trickle as the filter gets used up. This leads me to believe that people may be changing out their filter prematurely as I keep using it until the annoyance of waiting for the slow water overrides my laziness of changing the filter. My filters last somewhere between 3 and 6 months, although I had one last nearly a year. Hot water does kill it though so you really need to be careful...I've only made that mistake once. The 6 pack is around 8$ a unit which is really worth it to me...I could never stand the smell of funk that would fill my freezer after putting in some ice cubes...the PUR removes everything.
Customer Review: Works well, produces quality tasting water, lasted a long time. Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first water filter. The quality is there. Keep it chilled in the fridge and it's some of the best tasting water I've had. It's well worth the money, everyone should have one of these. The taste and gallon/price ratio makes it worth it alone. Also, who knows what is leaking into your city/well water. Makes coffee taste great too.
Here's a trick that they probably don't want you to know about.. When your filter stops working, it isn't because the filter itself stopped working. It's because the mechanism inside the filter housing has clicked all the way over and stopped the water flow. If you think your water still tastes good and it probably did right before it stopped flowing on you.. Simply remove the filter like you were going to install a new one.. and the mechanism in the housing resets, then reinstall the filter.
Now you can extend the filter until you wish to replace it. I would recommend replacing it eventually though.
