Tools and Hardware Reviews of PUR PBSS Push-Button Refrigerator Water FilterCustomer Review: Tastes Great, Less Filling Summary: 5 Stars
This appears to be the exact same product that Kenmore sales from their parts website, yet here it is half the price (~$30.). Still too much for something you have to replace twice per year -- a boondoggle for Kenmore. But this filter is working fine for me. I would encourage everyone to write Kenmore and ask them to build refrigerators that require less expensive filters. It's always good too imply if they don't, your next refrigerator will not be Kenmore. I understand that there is the option to buy a refrigerator that doesn't have filtered water at all, but that isn't the point.
When my refrigerator tells me it is time for a new filter, I reset the indicator (so it thinks I've changed it) and don't order a new one until it tells me again. I think the last time I did this twice. I'm not sure how badly this affects my water. I don't use it a whole lot -- a couple glasses per day at most. My understanding is that the change-filter light doesn't really know how much water has gone through the filter; it's based on how much time has passed and (as I read somewhere else on the internet, so it must be true :-\) the number of times the refrigerator door has been opened.
Any knowledgeable insights appreciated.
Customer Review: Great deal on a water filter Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased a Kenmore refrigerator this year that used an in-line water filter for ice-maker and water spout. I have used Kenmore products for years and very satisfied with them. I'm not written a review on the Kenmore product, but that is what is using this water filter. When my display on my refrigerator said i needed to replace my water filter I called Sears to purchase the replacement. I was in shell shock of the price. They wanted up to $50 for the filter. I decided to read other reviews and find out more about the specific water filter used by this brand. Found out that you do not need to buy from Sears. I ordered the same brand water filter with out the sears name on it and saved about $15. So I paid around $30 from Amazon. Great price! My previous in-line water filters were external from the fridge, so I didn't need any specific style filter, just one that would fit in the water line. With my new fridge things are a little different. The filter is attached to the fridge under the door. Very simple to replace. I'm glad I found a less expensive way of replacing the water filter for my new fridge. Thanks Amazon....
Customer Review: PUR Water Filter Summary: 3 Stars
We recently purchased a Sears refrigerator with the PUR water filter. To our surprise, the filter indicater, above the water dispenser, began running low within just several weeks of our purchase. So, we ordered another one online thinking our water consumption was a little high due to peak baseball season and summer time. Still, replace it in just 6 weeks? We were perplexed, but ordered a new one any way. The new one indicated a need of replacement just about the previous, original one. When I spoke with a Sears Tech, I was informed that the water filter company mark their computer indicater to replace per an originally programmed and measured number of consumed gallons it holds. That does not mean it is no longer effective when you consume more than the anticipated number of water gallons. The tech told me to ignore the indicator as it could be a gimmick for the company to make more money. I was further advised to replace it in 6 months as it lasts that long without worries. And so we did, and did not notice any water taste change. You decide what you think!
Customer Review: This must be Pur's el-cheapo model Summary: 1 Stars
This is the second PUR PBSS Push-button filter I've purchase thru Amazon. When I took the first one out of the package my first thought was that this filter was much lighter in weight than the PUR Kenmore 9030 filter I normally purchase from WaterFiltersFast.com. The PUR 9030 always lasted 3 to 4 months. The first PUR Push-button I purchased lasted only 2 months. Now this second one is hardly 1 1/2 months in use and we're already tasting chemicals and clorine in our drinking water. Now I know why the weight of the PUR Push-button was so light...there's evidently very little filtering materials inside. I guess the old saying, "You get what you pay for" is still correct. I saved $5 per filter plus free shipping on Amazon for the PUR Push-botton, and even with that savings did not get my money's worth. I've just ordered a PUR 9030 from WaterFiltersFast.com for $5 more plus $5 shipping....and feel it was worth every penny of the difference to get a filter that will filter more than 1 to 2 months.
Customer Review: Not the Same as the #4396710 Summary: 3 Stars
If you go to PUR's website, you'll find that this filter handles only 4 problem areas: (chlorine, sediment, lead, o-dichlorobenzene).
The more expensive #4396710 Kitchenaid/Whirlpool deals with 11 problem areas (the side of the box lists all these in detail: (chlorine, particulates, lead, mercury, benzene, o-dichlorobenzene, toxaphene, asbestos, cysts, turbidity, atrazine).
The strange thing is that the PUR website only seems to show the cheaper filter and its attendant 4 areas of filtering. It may just be my ineptness, but I couldn't find the other better filter on their website.
My wife, wanting the best water, always opts for the more expensive filter. It's around $60 in local area markets. I just ordered one from Amazon a couple of weeks ago for $35 delivered; other internet dealers carry it for around the same price.
