Tools and Hardware Reviews of DataShark 70018 Cable TV "F" Compression Bundle with Cable Cutter, Coax Stripper, Compression Crimper, and 10 RG6/RG6-Quad Cable TV "F" Connectors

Customer Review: Low expectations, pleasantly surprised
Summary: 5 Stars

The coax stripper, cutter and crimper all work very well. I was really please with how well everything worked, once I had everything that I needed for my specific job.

I am replacing some old R-59 wiring with some quad shielded R-6. It is funny, because I read a review where the person found the connectors were too big (even for their quad R-6). However, this was not the case with me and my job. The quad shielded R-6 that I have was too big for the connectors, and I ended up breaking a few connectors. However, I was able to use the connectors with some regular R-6 (thinner) that I had left around, and they worked perfectly. I went to the local hardware store and got some quad connectors that worked great with my specific coax cables. I went with the Paladin #9646, which are all metal and worked like a charm.

The crimper worked like a charm, and so did everything else. I have to say that I was nervous, but I am definitely glad that I went with this product. It was money well spent.

Customer Review: Used to make custom Belden 1694a cables
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this kit to make some custom Belden 1694a cables. The kit overall works very well.

The cutter does its job.

The stripper, unlike many others, requires 2 steps. First you strip off a quarter inch to the center wire. Next you strip off a quarter inch of just the outer cover.

The compression tool does its job and has a good feel to it--it seems to be well made. From what I've read, it also works with Thomas & Betts' (T&B) Snap-N-Seal connectors. From experience, it works with PPC EX6XL connectors.

The supplied connectors have a nice polished surface. They look better than PPC EX6XL connectors.

No flaring tool is provided, but this would be nice to avoid having to spread the braided shield with your fingers. Depending on the cable, this can be a bit prickly. I had no problem with the Belden 1694a cable though.

Customer Review: A very solid feeling connection
Summary: 5 Stars

After years of using the old type of connectors for cable, one of the installers for FIOS recommended that next time I need to make cables I use compression connectors. He was right, these are great and give a real solid connection. I bought the kit at Home Depot, where it also included a case (so I don't lose the individual components). I had no problems building my cables and the only thing that surprised me was the compression tool. I put the cable in with the new compression fitting, squeezed and thought that seemed too easy, maybe I didn't press hard enough or put the cable in correctly. Nope, it really was that easy.

If you like running your own wires or have cables that need to have new connectors put on them, I highly recommend going this route. This kit was convenient and made the job a lot easier. As others mentioned a flare tool would be nice, however that wasn't too hard to do manually.

Customer Review: Got the Job Done
Summary: 4 Stars

Product performs as described. This is my first attempt at terminating coax cables and everything was successful so I'm giving it a four. Not a five because I had to use a (don't know what its called) handle thing that screws into the terminal and lets you really leverage the end onto the cable. They're dirt-cheap but I would say absolutely necessary. I used it on RJ6 quad-shield cable.

No complaints about the functionality of the tools themselves. Did the job well. My cable company wanted 40 bucks to come out and terminate two ends. F that, for ten bucks more I can buy the tools myself.

I really can't imagine trying to get the fitting on the cable without the additional tool. The directions use the word "firmly". I nearly had a stroke trying to do it by hand. Buy this set then go down to your hardware store and buy the two dollar handle thingy.

Customer Review: Excellent product, works every time.
Summary: 5 Stars

Everything in this tool kit works great, the tools are high quality especially considering the price. I noticed a few people gave this a bad rating because they couldn't get the compression fittings on properly, this is NOT the tools fault, it's user error! On that note, you cannot just place the stripped cable end into the fitting and expect the compression fitting to hold. You MUST use some force when initially placing the fitting onto the cable so the inner piece of the fitting slides underneath the jacket on the cable, otherwise there is nothing for the COMPRESSION fitting to COMPRESS, which is what holds it in place.

I highly recommend this kit, it is very easy to use, works very well, and unless you are a professional cable installer, it will probably last you forever. Well worth the money!
