Tools and Hardware Reviews of Variable Wattage Soldering Iron 0-50 WattsCustomer Review: I expected more Summary: 2 StarsI bought this, because I thought it would be useful for hobby electronics. I had 2 non-variable watt irons already. I've used this one 2x.
From the back of the blister pack (card): "When the soldering iron is plugged in for the first time, there comes out a smoke from the tip end. The smoke stops in a short while and smoke never comes out again."
Both times I've used it so far, it has smoked. Not just from the end of the handle nearest the tip, but from the back of it too (the handle seems to be hollow all the way through).
The handle also has gotten hot. However the tip hasn't. I had to set it to 7 the first time I used it, and even then, had to hold the tip to the parts being soldered for a bit before the solder would start to melt on to them.
I don't remember any of my other soldering irons, or any I've used act this way either, but it's been years since I soldered on a regular basis.
It's possible I got a bad unit, but I'm not very happy with it. It should get me by until I can get a Weller station, and if not, I've got 2 non-variable ones I can use instead.
