Tools and Hardware Reviews of Peltor 97010 Ultimate-10 Hearing Protector

Customer Review: Effective Protection for Reasonable Price
Summary: 4 Stars

I had been using an old set of sound surpression headsets used by airline mechanics. I do not really know what DB reduction was achieved by these older headsets. However, I can say that the Peltor Ultimate 10 headsets did a much better job of reducing noise. I use these noise surpression headsets occasionally in an indoor shooting range that can be very noisey and harmful to unprotected ears. The Peltor's reduce the sound pressure of my 9mm Glock to a boom, that while still being quite loud, did not annoy my ears. To test them, I traded headsets with a shooter next to me who was using the standard range headset and found the Peltors to be much more effective. If there is any drawback to the Peltors it is that they stick out rather far from your ear because of the additional damping material inside the earpiece. This creates no problem for me but very rarely, some shooters have a particularly different shooting posture in which they bend their necks while aiming and can touch their shoulder with the headset. This is not a good shooting posture and perhaps the Peltor headsets can even help correct it. I think the Peltors are a good product at a reasonable price. Please be aware that using sound surpression headsets can block out so much sound that you cannot hear things that you need to hear. An example might be not hearing someone who is being hurt by mechanical equipment where you cannot prevent further injury because you cannot hear the problem. The important thing with sound surpression earphones is to reduce the sound pressure on your ears to a safe level but not so much that you become totally isolated from your surroundings. In this aspect I think the Peltor's are a reasonable compromise between isolation and protection.

Customer Review: They're inexpensive and very effective!
Summary: 5 Stars

The remuddler who owned my 1925 Colonial Revival home before me placed cheap-crap 12" faux-stone tile over the existing bathroom floor and the remuddler before that placed 4" ceramic tile over top of the home's original 1-inch hexagonal tile (from 1925). So when it was time to "restore" the 1920s bathroom, I got my cold chisel and my hammer and started knocking loose those two layers of extraneous floor tiles. After about two hours of this work, I'd chiseled my way down to the original flooring and found those gleaming white 1920s hex tiles. And I lost some of my hearing.

For the next two weeks, my ears were "off" and I couldn't hear right. It was like listening to someone talk through a blown speaker. I immediately went to the local gun shop and bought these Peltor Bullseye hearing protector muffs, and they have done the trick. They're about $20 and suddenly that horrifically loud noise of a hammer hitting a cold chisel against ceramic tile buried in 3" of cement no longer sounds like much of anything.

My hearing eventually returned to normal but you can bet I will never ever do any work like that again without first donning my ear protection.

So if your hearing is worth $20 to you, buy a pair of these muffs. If you're involved in any type of construction work whatsoever, it'll be money well spent.

There's only one downside: When I put on my protective eyewear and my nuisance dust mask and these blue muffs, Teddy the Dog barks at me. I guess I *do* look a little alienesque.

Customer Review: better than Peltor H10A
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a faithful fan of the red/black Peltor/AO Safety H10A earmuffs for a good many years, but this Peltor Ultimate 10 is even better. The Ultimate 10 has the softest cushions (definitely the best and most comfortable ones I can find) and the NRR has been bumped up by 1 to 30 NRR. Theoretically the human ear should not be able to distinguish a NRR difference of less than 3, but somehow when I put it on I can feel that the Ultimate 10 with its NRR of 30 does a better job of attenuating noises than does the H10A with its NRR of 29, and they are so affordable to boot.

In addition to wearing these earmuffs while operating loud machinery at home, I wear earmuffs in my office to block out typing and talking noises from co-workers, because without good earmuffs on my head, I find it hard to concentrate when I read or write. I don't like the feel of earplugs. It is very effective in blocking out typing sounds and female co-worker voices, but not so the deeper male voices. I am still waiting for new technology to come up with an earmuff that can effectively block out low, deep bass/baritone voices in the 80 to 350 Hz range from male co-workers. The Peltor Ultimate 10 is the best of all earmuffs currently on the market but still manages to block out only about 20 decibels in the 150 Hz range. The Peltor Ultimate 10 is the best money can buy right now in both comfort and highest NRR.

Customer Review: Comfortable, Affordable protection
Summary: 5 Stars

I researched several pairs of headsets here on Amazon before reading the other glowing reviews of the Pelcor 97010 and deciding on this particular pair/brand. I have never bought any ear protection before, but I just recently purchased a backpack leaf blower and knew I would want something to protect my ears.

These earmuffs are very comfortable and fit nicely around my giant head! I wear a fitted size 7 7/8 hat, so I needed something that would not only protect my ears but fit my head as well. These earmuffs provide a solid seal around my ears. They do not sit on my ears, they sit around them, cupping them prefectly. They provide outstanding protection for every application I have used them for--mainly mowing the yard, blowing leaves, and running the vacuum. The adjustments for these earmuffs are very sturdy, so once you adjust them to your size and fit, they will stay that way.

My only complaint--which is a minor one--is that I happened to drop them on the driveway once and when I picked them up there was a small divet about the size of a pea that was taken out of them. So the plastic outer shell is not quite as durable as I would like. But then again, I bought them to protect my ears and not to take them outside and spike them on the driveway. For the money and the protection it offers, this set of earmuffs is really hard to beat.

Customer Review: Effective and Comfortable
Summary: 5 Stars

I originally purchased these to supplement the pair of ancient Tasco over the head muffs I'd been using for years. What a difference! Granted, my old Tasco muffs were well past the point of disposal, but still. The old Tasco muffs are tossed and I'm going to get another pair of these Peltor muffs.

These Peltor muffs are so comfortable I just can't get over it. I am amazed at the noise suppression these provide at all levels: Constant, high decibel shop machinery, run of the mill background noise such as lawn mowers and my neighborhood garage band, and the punctuated crack of large caliber range fire. All noises are attenuated considerably. Impressive.

Also impressive is how comfortable these are. Previously, it would be difficult for me to wear hearing protection because they were so uncomfortable. (OK, so they were 25 years old...) The cups on these Peltors are so soft and comfortable I can wear them for hours without bother. The press-fit sponge hearing protectors are effective and tend to be cool, but I'd have to say that these 97010 models are comparable, even though they cover the whole ear.

Add to excellent and comfortable noise attenuation the fact that these are so inexpensive and you've got a real winner. Great hearing protection. Super price. Highly recommended!
