Tools and Hardware Reviews of Peltor 97044 Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing ProtectorCustomer Review: Very good, but not the best now Summary: 4 Stars
I have been using these for seven years, or more. They have been 100% reliable and have been a great advantage in pistol shooting. The sound is balanced correctly, so you still have a proper sense of a sound's direction. The passive noise cancellation is adequate, as good as most headsets and better than many, but not the very best.
I wear these in the woods and at the range. In the woods they give a huge improvement on my already above average (for my 45 years) hearing, with the volume turned up I can hear birds that I didn't even realize were there before, as well as the sounds of distant neighbors going about their motorized business. I have been able to track a shot deer by the sounds of breaking twigs as it ran 25 yards before falling and rolling down a hill. Sounds that would have been lost in the aftermath of my 303 now perfectly audible.
The electronic hearing protection works very well, I am never aware of the onset of a bang, just a sudden silence which tapers off a moment later, as if someone had suddenly stuffed cotton wool into your ears.
There are only two down sides, after each bang there is a noticeable delay. On the range these delays can overlap the next shot, so in the end you get big gaps when your hearing is only as good as everyone else's. The cans are a bit bulky, so with a rifle like an AR15 where you need to get your head down to the sights they can interfere. Peltor have solved this with the Comtac models which have a cutout to give the stock clearance, but these don't have that.
Peltor have been excellent for me and I'd not hesitate to buy from them again, which is actually why I am here looking to upgrade to the Comtac so that I can use my radio gear at the same time as I am shooting.
Customer Review: they fit under ACH Summary: 5 Stars
these muffs fit 100% under ACH - mine is large sizs and it works fine with both types of chin straps. i was unsure of geting this because i was unsure it it would fit so i rolled the dice and won. it fits and works great. dont wory about the batt. replace ment its not hard pop off cup and replade and put back its not hard so many say it is but ? i think they r just scaird to break them. it does take some med force but u will be fine thay are quite strong and were mabe to pop off and back on this way
it takes 2 batt in ea side so if 1 side goes dead no prob. th other side works still . and if u r hard hearing in one ear as i am its even better set off muffs y? because u can have 1 side turn way up and the other at med vol. or the same if u at norm. hearing lv .
pros L and R side batt and vol are independent of eachother
2 AAA batt. ea side = small
FITS under ACH and chin strap - go MIL.
stops noise fast and pickes back up good
cost is good
4.5 star - imp.
con if your hearing is the same in both ears you may not like to ajust
both sides each time
you may feel as u r breaking the muffs when u r replacing the batt. or may
have to take them off again to aline the ear foam . np you will figher it
out its easy not hard
you get what u pay for, so if u want some thing that flys u to the moon try
a rocket - thease are good but no matter what some one always has one better
for a doller more
Customer Review: Works as advertised Summary: 4 Stars
While it's true that I had to return the first pair due to a faulty circuit in one ear cup (turned on and heard crackling, then nothing at all), the return process was simple, and the second pair worked perfectly from the start. Today I used them on the range, and the ability to hear my friend/brother without them having to yell was awesome. They fit great, had a lot of adjustment, and felt good for the hour I was there. No problems used over my safety glasses.
I gave it 4 out of 5, since it seems, like other people reviewing, that there is some quality control issues they need to work out. Also, the battery change is very difficult, for something that isn't going to be used on a regular basis for me. Seemed to be easier to get apart today, so either I'm getting used to how to do it, or the plastic is breaking in enough to where it isn't impossible to open up anymore. I also think that the battery change may cause the electronics to stop working in the future. They also don't recommend storing them with batteries inserted either. I'll see how it goes, and will update this review if I find that changing the battery did cause the unit to fail (again).
Since I didn't really know what NRR I would prefer on the range, I gave these a go. The packaging says they have an NRR of 20, and it probably achieves that. My preference is to have a bit more protection/noise deadening, so I'll probably use ear plugs under these, just to make sure I am safe. That's just me, I won't ding Peltor for not giving what wasn't promised.
Customer Review: Peltor 97044 - Not so User Friendly Summary: 3 Stars
At first I was excited about using these ear muffs for shooting, but various annoyances with the Peltor 97044 started to creep into the picture. For one, the sound reduction rating (19 dBA) was decent but also wasn't great. The ability to change from top of the head to back of the head was not an option, but I could live without that. However, once I figured out that installing/replacing the batteries were going to be a chore every time, I had to send the Peltor 97044 back because following the directions to install the batteries was not initially intuitive and proved to be a bit more challenging than I would like for changing them out on a firing range. Add to this was this ear muff was to be interchangeable for my wife and my own use. If she wasn't capable or comfortable with changing out the batteries easily on her own without tools, they had to go back. On the plus side, I did like the ability of the ear cups to pick up and amplify noise independently for ease of directional understanding of where a noise/voice came from. The fit was comfortable and seemed to be reasonably easy to adjust between my wife and my head sizes. Also, the profile (the ear cup size) was small, easily fit next to a rifle butt and did not feel like you were wearing lead bricks on your head when you bent over to pick something up like the old style noise canceling ear muffs did. However, in the end, we went with Howard Leight R-01526 for its better sound reduction rating (22 dBA), ease of battery change out and the ability to connect to an external sound source.
Customer Review: I don't usually review items but I feel I must this time Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased model 97044 Peltor hearing protector based largely on the reviews I read here. This is quite possibly the worst hearing protection I have ever used. I wrote this unit off as a lemon or part of a bad batch. However, I was at my local shooting range this past weekend when a gentleman approached me because he noticed that I was wearing the same brand that he had. We compared notes and realized that we both had the same issues. They are as follows.
1. The battery location and replacement procedure is ill considered and lends itself to the possibility of damage to the unit when accessing the battery compartment.
2. The location and orientation of the on/off/volume knob, specifically the right side, causes the right unit to be inadvertently activated when the unit is folded for storage. Thus draining the batteries in that unit between uses. This has happened twice.
3. The function of the unit during the first use was good. All subsequent uses have seen a severe decline in quality of the electronics of the unit. My unit crackles and pops. The other gentleman's does not work at all and he feels that he gets very little protection.
4. The actually Db reduction is somewhat suspect.
That all said, a friend has one of the other, more expensive models, that he is happy with thus far. I really don't know if I'm willing to give this company more of my money in hopes that there is light ahead. I really hope this helps everyone who is considering this model.
Caveat emptor!
