Tools and Hardware Reviews of Peltor 97079 Combat Arms EarplugsCustomer Review: Meh, so so plugs Summary: 2 Stars
Okay, so you've decided to go past the foamies and get a decent pair of earplugs, either to to stand on their own or to supplement earmuffs. You read the description for these and say "hey, they're right up my alley!" and order them. Well, maybe you should think again. As you can tell by the photo, they are rubberized plugs with a 3 soft rubber cups on either end. 3 yellows (with a small hole in the last cup to let a little sound thru) and 3 greens (without a hole). The only problem is that there is a plastic shaft that runs the entire length of the plug. While it might assist in getting the plugs into your ears as a bit of a handle, it's in the wearing that these things are uncomfortable. To get them to seal well, you have to push them into your ear canal so that the cups plug the canal. Your ear canal might be a straight shot in to the ear drum, but mine aren't. Getting these in far enough to seal means that the other end of the plug, with the stiff plastic shaft, is pressing into the cup of my ear which is somewhat painful. I also purchased a set of the SureFire EP3 Sonic Ear Defenders SureFire EarPro Sonic Defenders EP3 Hearing Protection Earpieces 1 Pair Medium and find that they are far, far more comfortable and do just as good a job with indoor/outdoor noise suppression. I've tried both at the range, and because the Peltor's have the handle bit sticking out, the inside of my low profile shooting earmuffs can bump the plastic bit hanging out of your ear and poke you in the ear. Not good. I find that I'd rather spend the extra $5 and get the SureFire.
