Tools and Hardware Reviews of Peltor 97079 Combat Arms EarplugsCustomer Review: Great, but better in some situations than others Summary: 4 Stars
These are really nice and they are way less bulky than many of the other forms of hearing protection out there and I think they work as well or better than the disposable foam ear plugs. They also have the nice feature that the yellow side is for when you are doing things that involve burst noises (like gunfire) while the gray is for consistent ambient noise (heavy machinery, etc).
Now for the caveat: If you are going to a shooting range which has panels between each of the shooters and/or you will be outdoors these are absolutely great and I'm hard-pressed to say you'd really need anything more. For most people this will be most of the time. At my particular gun club we have some indoor shooting events where the range does not have partitions between shooters. Essentially when you're indoors, you have shooters on either side of you, and you're all shooting at roughly the same time these start to feel a little like they are lacking.
Customer Review: Could be better Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased these for demolition work in and around my house. The hammer hitting a prybar indoors is quite a shock to the ear. The good news is that these definitely help dampen the spike in decibels, so they do their job well. The rest unfortunately is rather bad. They're quite uncomfortable and you really have to jam them in there to be totally useful. They also slip out over short periods of time so I'm constantly pushing them back in. I imagine over the course of continuous use, these would end up causing some kind of earwax blockage with the constant re-seating of the plugs.
In the end, for me, these are fine. I use them for the occasional demo work and sometimes when dumping all the glass and recyclables into the larger bin. I can't comment on whether they work too well with firearms, but I imagine the sound of the hammer on the prybar is in the same decibel range as a round from a gun being fired.
Customer Review: perfect for outdoor shooting Summary: 5 Stars
I can only speak for the noise activated cancellation end of these plugs, but that is the only end I intended to use. I'm using these plugs solely for shooting outdoors. For the price, I was extremely skeptical about the efficacy of these plugs. After a weekend of shooting, however, all my doubts were cast aside. With the noise activated end in my ear I would say I could hear at about 80%, compared to no plugs at all. My friends wearing normal earplugs on the other hand couldn't here well at all, as anyone who has worn earplugs will know. As far as the noise activated aspect goes, they work great. With every pull of the trigger the noise cancellation kicked in, maybe not quite as well as normal earplugs, but well enough that it wasn't uncomfortable at all. I would highly recommend these to anyone who wants to be able to shoot and communicate with others simultaneously.
Customer Review: Leenard Haynes Summary: 3 Stars
The product did as advertised but the vendor has very shoddy sales practices. The price on the product was only a few dollars but the shipping charge was not shown untill you provided your credit card and it was too late to cancel.I bought two kinds of ear plugs but the results were the same. The shipping charges were 3x the cost of the product and convinced me NOT to buy small items from you service. I could have stopped at any Walmart for the same things at a fraction of the cost. You should have your vendors SHOW THE TOTAL COST before asking for payment giving the consumer a chance to decline the purchase.I have been a good customer but these purchases have left me concerned about future buys.
Thank you,
Leonard Haynes
Customer Review: Not durable enough for extended use - Potentially Dangerous Summary: 2 Stars
I've tried many different types of earplug and muff-type hearing protection in 40+ years of competitive shooting. I bought a couple pair of these and was very happy with their performance so I bought several additional pair to keep with my range bags, in my cars, briefcase and with my power tools.
They initially appeared to be very durable and come in a convenient case so I expected a relatively long use.
They're made of three pieces and after a few uses, one pair SEPERATED and got stuck in my ear and I had to have the broken piece removed by a friend using a pair of tweezers.
They would be considered very expensive for one-time use so I'm sticking with one-piece plugs from here on.
