Tools and Hardware Reviews of Pentair FPOS1775A Flotec 1/4 HP 1790 GPH Utility PumpCustomer Review: Poor Performer Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this pump originally from the big orange box to drain out my kid's 8' diameter swimming pool. I had previously used a retired 1/2 hp sump pump with a tethered float with great success and performance until it died from an impact injury. When I purchased the Intellipump, I thought it looked slick (which it does), no external float to get in the way, and with 1/4 hp it should still pump out my kid's pool in 10 minutes instead of 5 minutes... or so I thought.
So I hook up the garden hose and wait. About 1/2 hour later the pool was nearly empty. During the initial operation, I noted the pressure flow curve in the manual, and tried to keep my outlet as low as possible which helped somewhat, but in my opinion the output ratings of this pump do not accurately represent the performance that would occur in real world conditions. If you hook up a garden hose to this unit, it better be a short one, or you will be better off using a bucket. It doesn't pump out as low as my old sump pump did either.
Not wanting to completely give up on my dear purchase I tried another application which had minimal performance requirements, but needed a compact size. Again I found disappointment with the operation. It seems that the pump does not directly sense the water level, but instead uses a sequence of timed operation and some onboard electronics to cycle the pump every 30 seconds to 5 minutes to determine if any water is present. Since this application was inside the house it was not acceptable to hear the thing run every couple of minutes. It tells you all of this in the manual, but if you read about it on the outside of the box you will be deceived.
Since the unit has no value to me, I thought I should at least take it apart to see what to NOT look for in my next purchase. It is a very nicely packaged unit from an engineering standpoint. Very simple, oil bath cooled motor in the core. The level sensing function is controlled by a small circuit board inside which monitors the timing sequences, and I presume monitors current draw to determine how long it should wait until it tries to pump again.
Clearly aesthetics and cost reductions caused some poor design compromises during the development of this product. I will be hesitant to purchase products from this manufacturer in the future.
Okay, I admit to one mis-truth from above. I actually took the unit apart to see if I could unclog it or somehow fix it. No dice there, but I did learn from the experience, so I give it a charitable 2 stars. Maybe I can still find a use for this thing if I remove all of the electronics and add an external level sensor... and pump downhill.
