This humidifier is a real lemon and the company knows it because you cannot get anyone to answer their 800 number or the 901-248-2222 number at their Memphis service department. I bought the unit just before Xmas and it only worked for a week or ten days before it started short cycling (ON for 15 seconds, OFF for 15 seconds. After carefully following the instructions in the owners manual I plugged it in and reset the cycle time to 3. I turned on the fan to high and it ran for about 15 seconds and quit. Two more attempts to follow the instructions resulted in the same experience. I now have no humdifier and cannot get the attention of the Hunter Fan Company. I am cancelling my order with Amazon and letting them handle the problem. I wish them luck while I buy another company's humidifier.Customer Review: works well

This holds a large amount of water which in theory should cut down on how often it is refilled. However, it does such a good job working to get the humidity level for which it is set that I have refilled it every day. I'm hoping once the humidity level in my house goes up the amount of refilling will go down. Other reviewers had mentioned the unit leaking the first few times but I haven't had that happen. I did set the unit in a large Rubbermaid bin just in case but have yet to have a drop of water show up in the bottom of the bin. This unit does a great job creating an ultra fine mist. No white mist on anything near it, nor do I have puddles created by too large droplets of water in the mist. It was pricey, but I'm satisfied with the cost based on how well it works.Customer Review: Sorry, threw both of mine out....

I had two of these units for two winters. They definitely increased the humidity in both rooms, including our bedroom. But last year, I started feeling congested in the morning when I waked up. I thought I was coming down with a cold. But it happened repeatedly. Finally, I tried not using the humidifier. Bingo.... No problems. Went back to using this unit and the same problems happened again. I think this "Permawick" technology may help prevent build up on the filter, but for me, it seems like the bacteria and allergens were not affected at all.
BTW, I switched to an Air o Swiss model just two weeks ago. It claimed to have several layers of protection against mildew and bacteria. So far, so good. I reviewed the product separately.

I've owned two of these humidifiers for 5 years---same unit but an older model number. The "permawick" isn't really "permanent", however the wicks have lasted me 4 years before they start to fall apart. You can buy new ones for $10. Don't know why so many folks complain about odors, algae, etc. I put bacteriost and cleanse clean (bought at Walmart) in the water tank every time I fill it up and this kills any bacteria plus removes any hardness from the water and deposits it on the bottom of the tray. Then once a week or so just rinse out the tray---its not rocket science. You can't ignore any humidifier for a whole season or you will have problems. None of them are perfect. If your water is hard, you will need to clean the unit more often.Customer Review: Fan blades cracked, PermWick began to rot

After one season of use, it got very noisy. The plastic fan blades developed several cracks and were rubbing against the fan housing. Then the blades flew apart.
I wanted a humidifier like my father has; an old belt type that has run for years. A plastic belt netting rotates through the water and past a large fan. But I cannot find those any more.
Wicks rot after a season, requiring replacement. So I was happy to see that this had a wick made of metal, over which water is pumped. However, part of the so called PermaWick rotted away after one season.
A permanent wick is a good idea, but inferior materials sabotaged it. Hunter replaced the entire unit free; we'll see if it lasts.
