Tools and Hardware Reviews of Petzl E86 PR Tikka XP Headlamp, RedCustomer Review: It instantly becomes indispensable ... Summary: 5 Stars
My wife had a Petzl Tikka Plus from about 8 years ago that has been through many extended camping trips and also found lots of use around the house. I finally decided to get one for myself and discovered this one, the Tikka XP (in red) from Amazon.
It surpassed the older Tikka in so many ways my wife decided she needed one also. The spot light, incredible brightness/distance of the beam and especially the warm hue of the light compared with the cold blue light of the other units make the XP stand out among all LED headlamps. We just ordered a third one in the Desert Camo for our son who is overseas in the military. He is excited to be getting one since he had one of the older Petzel Plus lamps that disappeared somewhere in Iraq.
This thing is so useful it becomes an indispensable part of your life! Everything I do that requires holding a flashlight while I do it has just become a much less frustrating and easier experience.
I've ordered some low self discharge batteries (Sanyo Eneloop) to keep them running at top performance. If alkaline batteries get weak the light dims but with the rechargeable NMH you can top off the batteries any time they need it and you won't be contributing to the local landfill.
A fine piece of equipment. The reviews here and at other forums and sites make it obvious, this is the headlamp to get.

The Petzl TIKKA XP is at the cutting edge of high-output hands-free-lighting. Though it weighs just over 3 ounces, this headlamp still blasts out up to 35 lumens to a distance of up to 114 feet. It gives you a lot of flexibility in terms of lighting options, too. You get three different lighting levels (maximum, optimum, and economic) and two beam options (flood and spot) for short- and long-range illumination. Plus, if you really need to see what's making that growling noise way up ahead on the trail, it features a boost mode that increases output to 40 lumens for a 160-foot range beam (boost mode automatically shuts off after 20 seconds to conserve energy). And if you get lost running away from whatever was growling at you, it also includes an emergency strobe mode that makes you easy to locate. The TIKKA XP will last up to 120 on the three included AAA batteries. If you do get toward the end of your charge, a battery level indicator lets you know when the batteries are 70% and 90% discharged. The Petzl TIKKA XP comes with a comfortable elastic headband and three AAA batteries. Three-year guarantee.--Josh Dettweiler What's in the Box Headlamp with strap, headstrap, 3 AA/LR6 batteries
