Tools and Hardware Reviews of Petzl E93990 Pouch Tikka 2Customer Review: Good Home for Petzl Headlamps Summary: 4 Stars
Despite the fact that it pained me to spend what I estimate should have cost a third as much, this is a worthy home for your Petzl headlamp. It does offer more protection than a zip-able sandwich baggie and it does have some features that make it worthwhile.
First, the case itself is reasonably well-made. It won't stand up to bear bites or hydraulic presses, but it keeps your headlamp tidy and free from all that would poke, scratch, scuff, or otherwise damage your light as it's living in your pack. It is made out of the same semi-rigid material as cases for portable hard drives and should easily protect your headlamp from falls on hard surfaces. (providing the light is in the case and not on your noggin)
Secondly, it has some useful features. There is a tiny pouch inside that accommodates your AAA batteries. This is great not only for storing the batteries when you put your headlamp away for a bit, but also to keep a set of spares when your headlamp is in use. There is also a tough, wide nylon strap on the back of the case that works really well for lashing the case to the outside of your pack or for wearing on your belt. I have found that it is actually wide enough to be useful, too, a detail I appreciate. The clamshell design of the case has webbing near the hinge so that if you open the case while you are wearing it on your hip, it won't just fall open, dropping the contents on the ground, or into the crevasse - Another nice touch that shows some thought went into the design. The zipper works well and smoothly and the small pull is covered by textured rubber, making it easy to grasp by gloved or cold hands.
So, while I have lots of good to say about this little case and have been impressed with its design and quality, I've got to ding it one star for the price. It is still, after all, only a very small case. (Using a small sock would work pretty well, I think, but it might look funny tied to your belt) Would I recommend it? Yes, I absolutely would, and I've gotten two myself. It's an accessory, however, and not an essential. I LOVE Petzl headlamps and I do want to take care of those investments, so I don't feel terrible about the price... It's just that I'd feel better paying five bucks or so less.
