It works unplugged for direct and reflected vhf signals but plugging it in provides a substantial boost enough to bring in uhf signals as well. I get reception from a north relatively unobstructed station 9.1 miles away,3 vhf channels and 1 uhf channel but also receive 3 vhf channels from a southeast station 6.3 miles away. The southeast station has a nearby structure between me and it. All of these signals are digital and I use an RCA converter box. It has an on/off switch and a cable/antenna switch which would also work for satellite signals. It's built sturdy enough but if it were heavier in the base that would be an improvement. The gain knobs are pretty much useless for digital signals in my application because they distort the signals but as mentioned turning it on provides a substantial signal boost that does not cause digital distortion. If you need to bring in primarily uhf stations(channels 14-66), I would not recommend this antenna. It is primarily a vhf antenna that will bring in perhaps 1 uhf channel at a time. For my application it works as well if not better than any other indoor antenna I've tried. But remember most of my free major network channels are vhf(CBS 8.1,CW 8.2,PBS 11.1,11.2,11.3 and NBC 13.1.) The only uhf channel I get is ABC 23.1 coming from the north tower array. When FOX 17 goes digital on Jun 12 I will not get that channel with this antenna because it's coming from the southeast and I'm blocked inside. Even if I could get it I'd lose ABC and have to run continuous channel scans which I don't like to do. Therefore I'm looking to at least a partial rooftop solution when that time comes. Like all indoor antennas this one can be sensitive to people walking around blocking or reflecting signals away from the unit so location is key. You may find the ideal location, perhaps not. If you have to run a coaxial cable extention to get the best spot for the antenna, it may be in another room from where the television is located. Antennaweb.org provides compass readings for your broadcast towers and a listing of avalable channels and which towers they are coming from. The compass readings are approximations. You should use binoculars to locate the towers if possible so you know exactly where to point your antenna. Good luck to you ! By the way the reason I get the PBS stations is I can point one telescoping element in that direction and they are strong enough being vhf signals to get through the nearby house or just slip over the structure and are reflected down to me. Uhf signals do not come in as strong. On average they are 20 to 40 percent weaker than vhf signals.
