Tools and Hardware Reviews of Pike Street 100% Egyptian Cotton 725-Gram 6-Piece Towel Set, WhiteCustomer Review: Four years later and I'm still using these towels Summary: 3 Stars
Update: June 2010
Note: In 2006, I gave these towels one-star; when I revised the review in 2010, I wanted to increase the rating to three stars. Apparently, there is a technical problem that is preventing me from making the change. Sorry--it should show three stars!
I bought these towels in February 2006 and almost returned them immediately. When I opened the cellophane package, the towels reeked of something that smelled like insecticide. I washed them all immediately, and after the bad smell was gone, I just loved how they felt. They reminded me of soft, fluffy, oversized hotel towels. In our household, we have used these towels almost daily, and they've received regular washing.
In my original one-year review, I was disappointed that some of the towels were showing signs of inferiority: edges had frayed on some and on others, the soft nap seemed to have disappeared.
But others pieces have remained in pretty good shape. So after over four years, I'm still getting good use from these, and except for my initial displeasure with the packaging noted above, I've been pretty satisfied.
Customer Review: A Little Disappointed... Summary: 3 Stars
I first purchased these towels in June 2007 and they were outstanding. So much so that I returned to purchase more in March 2008. For my most recent purchase, I found the towels by accessing my first order to ensure that I selected the identical towel. Despite the fact that both the first set and the most recent set have identical tags and style numbers, the towels are very different. The towels I just purchased are inferior in quality - thinner, flimsy, and already raveling after a single wash! The first set is far superior and after months and months of washing, have never frayed and still look brand new (that was the reason I came back for more).
It appears the manufacturer has significantly altered these towels or is misrepresenting their true gram weight. They feel more like 500-gram than the advertised 725-gram. They are now, no longer a great value. You'll get what you pay for - lightweight, medium quality towels. They are soft, but if you are used to the density and weight of a towel with a high gram weight, these will feel like "blue light specials" (not that there's anything wrong with that) ...
Customer Review: Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true... Summary: 2 Stars
I was looking for a "premium" bath towel at a good price when I came across these on Amazon. Heavy towel weight - check. Egyptian cotton - check. Good customer reviews - check. And two sets of towels for $30??!! That's less than the price of just one bath towel of these other brands I have been looking at! Sounds too good to be true? Well, in my case it was. The towels arrived today, and as I excitedly opened the package, I found these lovely, fluffy white towels. Just a few loose threads on them, I'll just pick those off...oops! Those loose threads were still attached to the towel, and there were clumps of them, some several inches long! These towels are clearly seconds, rejects, or else they have lousy quality control in the factory. Both bath towels had areas of loose threads. Anyways, I'm sure they will be soft and fluffy, but I'm sure the threads will also pull as they are washed. I think they should be advertised as seconds, not first quality. I'm sure they will perform fine and feel soft; they just won't look great. I, for one, will return them as I was not planning to buy factory seconds.
Customer Review: Towel set is okay, but.... Summary: 3 Stars
I had to let the whole bunch (4 of each size) soak in the washer for an hour, in hot water, for at least 2 washings before they became
'thirsty' enough for drying well. I have no idea why this caliber of cotton wouldn't be good from the get-go...unless somebody pulled a fast one at the Mill. I've bought much cheaper towels that dried much better right off the bat so this is a real puzzle to me. I don't use dryer sheets at all for towels of any kind, so that's not a factor. They are all VERY plush, soft and a nice size. All of them are good for drying now, but be prepared to work for it by letting them soak for a while in the washer if you get these. Oh, and don't be expecting to like the bath cloths in this set very much. Even though they are a nice size too, I find the hem-finished outside edges very bulky and the border should be more toward the edge. All things considered, I doubt I will buy more of these.
Customer Review: Very nice Summary: 5 Stars
I bought these towels in 2008 to pamper myself a bit. It has been nearly 3 years of daily use and they remain absorbent, good looking (enough to offer guests and have them comment how nice they are), are still as soft as the day they arrived and are otherwise great towels. The one and only drawback my wife and I have had (I am married now) is that they are not bath sheets: if I had known about bath sheets I would have bought those at the time.
At any rate, if you like normal sized towels this is a greta set. They will fit around normal sized people (like myself) and are very durable and retain their brilliant white appearance over time.
