Tools and Hardware Reviews of Pike Street 100-Percent Egyptian Cotton 725-Gram 6-Piece Towel Set, CreamCustomer Review: Are the towels seconds? Summary: 3 Stars
I placed 5 orders at twenty bucks each, for a total of 10 sets of towels (that's ten bucks a set). While the towels seemed soft, I returned them. The problems:
1) TERRIBLE SMELL. The towels had a strong, terrible petro-chemical smell to them. My husband thought it was fertilizer. I washed them several times with detergent using a vinegar rinse. The smell subsided but it was still there.
2) POOR FINISH. The finish, fabric, and edges are not a quality job. There are tufts of fabric in most towels, and loose weaves in the middle. If you pull or snip the thread, you are effectively creating a hole in the towel. (See other reviews reporting holes & shreds after use.)
3) TOO MANY FLAWS. I had 10 sets of towels -- of these, nine bath towels had some flaw that was noticeable after washing & drying. The flaws are initially hard to spot when the towels arrive because they are flat and densely packed. But after wash and inspection, flaws are noticeable. (And I didn't have to look very hard.)
I was left with the impression that the towels are seconds.
Customer Review: Non-absorbent losers! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought these towels because they got decent reviews overall and I figured the negative reviews were from people who expected too much from $20 towels. However, now I see that the negative reviews were the most accurate.
After one normal fabric-softener-free washing, these towels were already unraveling. Not only that, but they are the least absorbent towels I've ever used. They are super soft, which is nice, but they literally do not absorb. I usually leave my long hair wrapped in the towel for a few minutes while I moisturize, etc. With my usual towel, it's damp when I remove the towel. With this towel, when I removed the towel after 5-10 minutes, my hair was still soaking/dripping wet.
I honestly would not even feel good using these as guest towels. Now I'm thinking about giving them to Goodwill, because it seems like a shame to throw them out after 1 (or 0) uses.
Customer Review: Good but not great Summary: 4 Stars
These towels are heavy and soft.
As other reviewers have noted however they do have a rather pungent chemical smell to them upon arrival. I had to wash mine twice to get rid of the odor.
As other have also noted these tend to, "shed." The fist couple times through the dryer I've had to empty the lint trap of what looked almost looks like the cotton you used to get in aspirin bottles. And I noticed that as my shirt comes into contact with the towels during folding, little balls of cottom start to stick to me. I have a feeling this will go away after a couple more washings and am not too worried about their durability.
The only really annoying thing I noted was some stitching that came undone around the edges of one of the hand towels I bought...So far this is the only major quality control issue I've encountered.
Customer Review: Got 'em, Love 'em, You Will To Summary: 5 Stars
I have a set of these in each color and use them daily. So what does that prove other than I'm a clean person? Read on.
In actual usage I found that not only is the price exceptionally good (a steal combined with free shipping) but the quality is very high. I compare them to some name brand mail order towels which I've ordered in the past and I think the quality is at least as good -- for 20% of the price that I paid for the famous brand.
Absorbency has been fine. I don't notice any odor, but I do hang up the towels to dry after each use so that may contribute to the satisfaction level on the smell. I say go ahead and grab some of these before they're sold out again. The packaging includes two sets.
Customer Review: Fabulous towels, like clouds! Summary: 5 Stars
These towels are fabulous. What can I say: they're super soft, thick, large, and do a great job. I have never had towels this nice, because I am a cheapskate and don't like to pay outrageous prices for nice things. I like a deal, and these are certainly a deal. I got 2 sets to be able to rotate.
Not sure why folks don't think they are absorbent...I washed and dried mine before using per the instructions (without terribly much lint loss, I might add) and they are great.
Even my husband, who would not notice if I gave him a Brillo pad to dry off with, noticed how soft and plush these are. Get them...you will not be sorry!
