Tools and Hardware Reviews of Porta-Nailer 461 1-Inch 18-Gauge Narrow (1/4-Inch) Crown Flooring StaplerCustomer Review: Small, light, but fires intermittently Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this stapler because of the removable flooring foot - a rare feature. The stapler arrived in a nice case and in good condition.
The first problem came when connecting it to my air compressor - the fitting supplied with the stapler was a little out of spec and didn't let my air hose connection seat all the way, allowing the air hose to pop off. You may need to change this fitting depending on your air hose.
There's also something not quite right with the feeder - it fires a staple about 75% of the time, and the rest of the time it dry-fires.
Final issue - the flooring foot is designed for very thin flooring and is not adjustable. It didn't fit my 5/8" T&G flooring at all, so I ended up taking it off. However, the firing point is small enough that it's easy to position it on the tongue and lay flooring without the foot.
All the negatives being said, though, it's a very easy to use stapler, lets you get in pretty tight places, it's simple to reload, and it's easy to see how many staples are in the magazine. It's rugged and lightweight. So once you get used to the misfire rate, you can go pretty fast with it.
Customer Review: Worked like a charm. Summary: 5 Stars
Knowing that I had a flooring job that was going to take place over multiple weekends, It made more sense cost-wise to just outright by a flooring stapler. After a little online research, I chose the 461 for a couple of reasons. One, was the fact that it could easily be converted to a standard stapler (something few models do). Also, the price point was reasonable.
After finishing the first 200 sq ft. of the project this weekend, I can honestly say that the 461 worked like a champ. After dialing the pressure into 70 PSI, the 461 sailed through the Bruce Engineered hardwood flooring in my kids bedroom. I never had one dry fire, twisted staple, blowout or any other issues whatsoever.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the nailer. My one complaint may be the lousy directions (which don't even specify how to convert the nailer from standard configuration to floor stapler). Aside from that, I'm very happy with its performance.
Customer Review: great nailer Summary: 5 Stars
just got done installing about 50 sq. ft. of 5/16" solid oak bruce flooring in my entry way. I was going to buy just a finish stapler to do the job, but after reading reviews on this product and the fact that it comes with an adapter to make it a regular stapler, I killed two birds with one stone. this stapler made the job a breeze. It shot staples at a 45 degree angle every time. did not jamb once. I would highly recomend this stapler to anybody who is going to be installing wood flooring. I certainly am glad I bought it for the simple fact that I'm getting ready to remodel my kitchen, dining room, and laundry room, all of which will have wood flooring. With this stapler it will make the job a breeze.
Customer Review: Poor quality control Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this tool based on reviews....should have bought the Senco.
I had to repair the nailer before I could even use it...the magazine spring was defective. I had to file the interchangeable head in order to install it. I was able to staple about 600 sq. ft. of flooring before the magazine spring failed again.
Porta Nails is sending me a new spring, (they have no service in the Sacramento area)which I can install. Would prefer a new tool.
The stapler works well when it works. But based on this experience, I will go with local vendors and brands known for reliability in the future.
I cannot recommend this tool.
Customer Review: Excellent tool... Summary: 5 Stars
Used this to lay Bellawood 2 1/4" strip, 5/16" thick Brazilian Koa hardwood in about 325 sq/feet.
I'm a do-it your-selfer who'd never done hardwood flooring install before. I couldn't imagine actually doing this job without this tool.
No jams during the project. I had to play with the pressure because at recommended settings it was cracking the lips of my boards. If pressure was too low, the gun would occasionally not shoot a staple. Once I found the correct pressure, it worked like a charm.
Project turned out nice. It would have taken FOREVER without this, the correct tool for the job.
