Tools and Hardware Reviews of Poulan Pro 400E 18-Inch 4 HP Electric Chain Saw

Customer Review: 3rd Time's a Charm
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the 3rd chainsaw I bought and it is amazing. I had borrowed an electric Remington and it was a piece of junk. I bought an electric Ryobi and the first time I used it, the chain became undone. I exchanged it for a gas one and beside the noise and polution, it didn't cut well. After reviewing numerous chainsaws on Amazon and reading the reviews, I decided to try the Poulan Pro 400E and I am glad I did. True to what other reviewers have said, this is a GREAT chainsaw. We have a huge backyard with lots of mature trees and we have been trimming them and have cut a couple of dead ones down. This chainsaw is able to cut the longer and thicker pieces down to firewood size. The only problem I have found is after about 15 minutes of use, the cutting power isn't as it is when it is cold. Can it be overheated? The chain DOES stay nice and wet, and you can tell because you can see the oil coming off it when you start the chainsaw. Overall, I recommend the Poulan Pro 400E. Great product.

Customer Review: Worked great, until it didn't...
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased one of these about a week before Hurricane Gustav came through Baton Rouge, not even thinking about ever using it to clear off down trees. I thought it would be better to get an electric model and not have to fool with gas and oil. That was a mistake. After the rain stopped, I ended up carting a generator around in a wheelbarrow to use the chainsaw.

When it had power, the chainsaw worked great. I could cut through just about anything a gas model would cut. The only problem with the generator was that the saw would trip the overload protection when cutting though large branches (over 10 or so inches).

After about 3 or 4 hours of use, the unit just stopped working. I cleaned out the bar, thinking something had jammed it, but no. It was dead. It was a huge bummer to have it die while I was cleaning out the yard. I have returned it and purchased a gas model. If you live in storm prone areas, stay away from electric!!!

Customer Review: Electric chain saw rocks
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a new homeowner with 5+ acres. Mostly wooded. I didn't realise how important having a chain saw would be.

Over the past three years. I have had the odd tree fall down or lean in a way that made them somewhat dangerous. So I have rented gas powered chain saws to ease the problem.

Was not to happy with them. Trying to figure out gas/oil ratios. Having to prime before cranking and sometime not having them start.

This past winter I had 8 trees come down and decided it was probably time to get a chain saw. Read good comments on the Poulan 18" Pro. So divied up and bought one.

Have cut up ALL eight trees. Each with at least 24" diameter. Used about a gallon of chain oil but haven't had to replace or sharpen the chain yet.

A great investment and I would highly recommend the Poulan 18" pro elactric chain saw for any homeowner in need of such a piece of equipment.

Customer Review: GREAT for the infrequent user, plenty of juice
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this chainsaw to cut down a giant set of junipers in my backyard. It was a tangled mess, branches 30+ feet long, all hooked and twisted among others. I say this because the ability to easily cut, then stop cutting to try and get out what I had cut off was a key reason I bought an electric one. you can cut for a few minutes and just set it down, no restarting BS like with a gas one. The Poulan had the juice I needed, cutting through 10-15 inch stumps no problem. Also, I know I wont use my chainsaw more than once or twice a year, so the maintenance on a gas one didn't make sense to me... this one will be ready to go anytime, as long as the oil is full. the oiler worked great, every time I checked the chain for tension, the bar was well oiled. the chain tensioning system worked well, as with any chainsaw, the chain loosens, but it was easy to adjust and maintain. If you are a homeowner, this would be a great option.

Customer Review: Please! Pay attention to the warning labels.

This chainsaw worked OK at first. I was using it to edge the lawn and it did a pretty good job. Not quite as clean as I would have liked but you can't beat the price. Well, I got to the end of one side of my lawn, and I wanted to turn it off. Not knowing how to do so (I didn't really read the directions), I just tried to grab the blade and stop it with my hands. Boy was that a bad idea! Now I don't have any fingers and I had to buy that $900 dictation software so that I can still use my computer. I really should have paid attention to that label that said "do not attempt to stop blade with hands", but who really pays attention to that stuff? The worst part about it is that I can't do my job anymore and I can't even sue the company that made it(something about putting a warning label on the product removes their liability). Yeah, I saw that warning label and it wasn't kidding! I will never "attempt to stop blade with hands" again!
