Tools and Hardware Reviews of DuroMax XP4400E 4,400 Watt 7.0 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel Kit And Electric StartCustomer Review: Power Max XP4400E & XP4400 Generator Summary: 5 Stars
By Ernie, Retired Journeyman Lineman. The XP4400E is well worth the extra cost over the XP4400, as starter rope must be pulled out at an angle.
This is an excellent generator for the money. The voltage regulation is excellent. Amazing output for it's size along with being very quite for the output that it has. The discription Amazon has for it is great, so many items are not discribed well enough. There is a couple points I want to share with present owners and would be owners.
(1) The voltage selector switch not only changes the voltage monitor 120 to 240 but it's main function is tap changing, this being the reason it must not be switched unless breaker is off (open) or generator shut down. It parallels the two power windings when set for 120 to the 120 sockets and the 120-240 socket. You can draw full capacity fron the 120 sockets or at the 120-240 socket from terminals Bu & R, the W terminal has no voltage so 240 is not available now. (Refer to owners manual wiring diagram page 23 or 24)
Set for 240 the switch series the two power windings and now the 120 sockets have only one power winding applied and so half capacity is available here, 1750 watts from either one but only 875 watts each if both are used. The 120-240 socket now has both windings in series and now has 240 from terminal W to Terminal R and will have two 120 circuits, one from terminal W to terminal Bu and the other 120 circuit from Bu to R. Full capacity is available with the 240 voltage and half capacity from each of the 120 circuits. (Bu is the common terminal to both sockets)
(2)It isn't specified the engine has a steel cyinder sleeve and I don't think it does as I run it for 6 hrs. and changed oil and the oil in the drain pan was pretty well loaded with aluminum and silicon swirling around. I will change again after 12-14 hrs. and then every 20 then on. A filter would have been a boon for engine life, but be diligent and change oil often and it will run a long time.
I think some have gotten generators and done them in early because they didn't change oil in time. Very, Very important because the cyinder is aluminum and no oil filter. More power to all, Ernie Wireman
Customer Review: Buyer beware Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the XP4400E. I purchased it for the good price that it is and thinking it was relatively quiet. I added the oil and turned the key and started right up! I used this on the weekends away to run my RV and car charger in my car trailer and it had all the power I needed! The key start is a really great feature, because I didn't want my wife having to pull start the generator. These are the PRO's. Now the CON's- 1. About every 4 to 5 days of running it 8 hours a day (min) it will shutdown on the low oil level. This needs to be checked everyday before you use it!! If you run it all weekend just about it will shutdown on low oil pressure. There is no indicator or indicator light to tell you why it's off! Because this unit can run long periods of time it gets hot and it will burn oil! There's not much oil in this to start with so it's pretty important you pay attention to this. 2.The starter solenoid broke not once but twice in the first 6 months i had this generator. I contacted the manufactuer and it was under warranty for the item but, I had to pay for the freight. Not the most easiest thing to replace either. The tools that come with the kit ie: screwdriver was the right size to remove the screws but it was really useless to do the job. I used my own to get it done. After the 2nd time it broke I deciced to use a screwdriver across the terminals to fire up the generator. 3. And as of 10-10-10 it threw the rod out the side of the aluminum block on a beautiful fall afternoon. I think at that point the low oil shutoff worked really well! 4. New it's noisey but it is expected. BUT, the muffler is pretty quiet considering (not a honda) it's the motor that's loud! It worked for me and I had it self contained in a big box on the back of my RV and it was still noisy! You can't be that close to your freinds all night in your RV's and stay freinds by morning if they have to listen to it!! I bit the bullet and bought 2 honda 2000 series generators instead. They sound like a large cat purring at idle but are pricey. $1900.00 for the pair including the interconnectors to make 4000 watts. Freight was free and no tax thru WISE EQUIPMENT.COM. 3 year bumper to bumper warranty!
Customer Review: Very nice unit! Summary: 5 Stars
I have many years experience with generators of this type. This one was purchased to replace mine which was stolen.
I purchased this generator mainly as a temporary backup should I experience a power failure. I do not intend to wire it into the house circuit, rather to just power up items like freezer, fridge, etc. as needed to maintain the temps.
I also use this type of generator with my race car activites and it works great to power lights, wrenches, etc. at the track.
A word of caution with any generator of this type and that is to keep fresh fuel in the tank. Also do not let fuel sit in the carburetor for any period of time or it will varnish up and plug the internal passages. I drain the carburetor if it is going to sit for any period. I also run the carbuetor dry when I shut off the unit, simply by closing the fuel valve and letting it run out. However, this does not completely drain the carburetor in my experience. I urge anyone owning a unit like this to start and run it periodically or it will not work well when you need it.
This unit appears to be very well made. It is compact, very quiet and fires right up with the electric battery start.
The large outlet (120/220V) has a four prong connector. Many of the available extension cords are 3 prong so look closely. I highly recommend the following connector cord I purchased through Amazon.
"Coleman Cable 01924-02 12/4 3-Foot Y Twist-Lock Adapter Cord, Yellow"
Tools & Hardware; $14.97
Sold by: Auto Barn
This connector provides two 120V outlets which are handy and the 4 prong connector does not pull out of the generator.
I highly recommend storing the unit inside. The wheels and handles make maneuvering very easy. The available cover fits well and offers good protection.
I am extremely pleased with htis unit.
Customer Review: Supports 30A service to trailer Summary: 5 Stars
This generator does support 30A service for RV use. I did a lot of research before purchasing this one. Some competing brands imply that they are suitable for RV use, but actually are limited by 13A fuses, so that you can't draw more than that through a single plug. With the use of an L14-30 - TT30R pigtail adapter (e.g., [...] has one specifically for this brand), you can draw all output through the 120/240 L14 plug on the panel. In tests, I have put close to full rated 30A load with my RV through the single L14 plug using the adapter, with no problem. The generator handled the load easily. Its compact size (17"x17"x24" w/o wheel kit) and weight (120 lbs) means that it fits in the bed of my truck in front of my 5th wheel hitch for travel - and that I can put it there w/o help or popping a disc in my back! The oil fill plug is located on the front of the engine, giving me easy access. The oversized muffler eliminates most exhaust noise such that the engine operating noise is louder than the exhaust. Per the distributor, the cylinder has a cast iron sleeve, so it should last. Exactly what I was looking for.
You can find it a few bucks cheaper elsewhere, but I went with Amazon because of Amazon's reputation. Also, look at other sellers' return policies, as some only offer store credit on returns, and in addition charge you a restocking fee as well as for the "free" shipping, and return shipping, for returned or damaged items.
Customer Review: Excellent product, but... Summary: 4 Stars
Pros: Well packed. Following instructions easy to unpack and assemble. Not quite enough power in battery to power up initially, but with the pull starter it started on the 2nd crank. Runs much quieter than other generators I have had and pulls power about as advertised. I put in a little less than a gallon of gas and have run for 1 1/2 hours and still have gas left. Compact and good looking unit. Battery needs about 1 1/2 hours of engine running to build up enough juice to start the engine after it has not been run for a few days.
Cons: When I started unpacking 1st generator discovered rust on most of the welds and where the screws attached the motor, etc. to the frame. (Paint was missing in these areas) Apparently moisture had gotten into the box. I contacted Amazon by email and within 2 hours another one was on the way. (Amazon's response was efficient and timely...and quite appreciated.) When 2nd generator arrived I found rust on welds but decided that I could remove the surface rust and repaint in about 1 hour so kept this one. I would suggest they find out where the moisture is getting into their boxes...and insure that the welds and areas where the engine is attached to the frame are painted. I realize this is cosmetic but I have never seen rust on other generators I or my friends have had, so I had to deduct a little here.
