Tools and Hardware Reviews of PowerMax XP3500 Quiet Portable Gas Powered Portable Generator

Customer Review: Inexpensive Camping Generator
Summary: 4 Stars

For the most part I am happy with this generator. MaxTools shipped a XP4400E with electric start. It seems to do the job. However, it has 2 glitches that need to be noted. The fuel guage window has become more and more opaque over the short 3 months that I have owned the generator. The plastic used in the gauge window is obviously not fuel vapor resistant- However, I can live with this. One other note- The fuel line turn-off valve (the one below the tank) leaks slightly when in the "flow on" position. (note- I replaced it under warranty-had to pay shipping on the valve, however). Other than these two items- It works just great and the price was absolutely right.

2009 update- After running the generator on five different occasions in 2008-2009 during power outages, one lasting 18 hours, I feel compelled to update my opinion of this generator. The starter key switch failed on the starting motor in early 2009, so I have had to pull start the unit. Although the unit seems to produce reliable power, it keeps having little irritating problems- seems as if no one qc'd the generator before it was shipped.

Customer Review: Understanding the watt power for using this product
Summary: 5 Stars

I live in hurricane alley at the foot of the Gulf of Mexico. After suffering through Katrina and after carefully studying my minimum needs for emergency power I bought this product. I am very happy with it.

I have installed a small manual transfer switch which can use six of my main box breakers. My fridge runs at 600 watts but the start up surge is 1800 watts. I will start this up first before adding the load of my two window A/C units, which both run at 650 watts and have a very little need for extra wattage start up surge.

The necessary run surge as compared to the 3X start up surge on some appliances, was, at first, hard for me to understand. But is a vital piece of knowledge before knowing how powerful a generator to buy.

This unit cannot be expected to run a 2000 watt appliance that has a 6000 watt surge need. But if you stagger your appliance's on line startups, this unit can fit your needs, and can run for 3-4 hours per gallon of gas at 50% load. Larger, more powerful generators are great IF purchasing emergency gasoline is not a problem.

Customer Review: Reasonably priced generator
Summary: 4 Stars

This generator design is common to several manufacturers. I purchased two of this particular model after experience with the same design from a different manufacturer. Positive aspects: good Japanese carburetor, fuel/water separator, easily cleanable fuel filter, engine starts easily. Negative aspects: poor quality owner's manual, surface rust on a new(!) product, one generator was improperly packed for shipping, some of the warning labels were written by non-English writers (they're actually funny), no warranty information (and no response from Max Tools when I inquired). I'm not certain about the two-stage air filter (both elements are foam) -- in my experience, foam filters eventually disintegrate.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced Chinese generator that appears to be fairly reliable, then this is probably it.

I read the reviews on everything I buy before making any purchase, this is the first time I have written one. I purchased this generator to put to work powering our race team. My son drives a dirt track micro sprint race car running every Saturday from April to October. This is our second season running this machine and I am amazed how great it is. Unlike another reviewer I do power an air conditioner (Carrier Air V 13,500 BTU roof unit drawing nearly 15 amps at 95 degrees outside temp)while simultaneously powering 6 florescent tube lights and 2 halogen spot lights. This machine is reliable, quiet, light weight and easy to start. If you are considering purchasing one what are you waiting for?

Customer Review: PowerMax 3500 Generator
Summary: 5 Stars

I just received this generator and am very impressed with the build quality. Excellent price and with free shipping it's the best deal I've found. Shipped from MaxTool and came in the day they said it would. Started with the first pull and runs so much quieter than my old one. Only time will tell if it holds up well but as I mentioned the build quality is there so I expect it will do nicely for my purposes as an emergency generator and occasional use with my travel trailer. Manual and parts book easy to read. Very nice features included on this unit.
