Tools and Hardware Reviews of Powerwasher PWS1800-U 1,800 psi 1.6 gpm Electric Pressure WasherCustomer Review: What you get for your $ Summary: 2 Stars
I chose this power washer based on a few criteria. Firstly, it's electric and I was trying to avoid care and maintenance issues related to owning another gas engined power tool that would only see use every other year or so. Secondly, at 1800psi it's just the right output for pressure washing pine decking. Thirdly it's affordable. Lastly, the customer reviews here on Amazon.
At $165 dollars I suppose one shouldn't expect great quality. Cheap plastics are pretty much a given. But I think it's fair to demand that a product at least deliver on the basics, and that's where this one failed for me.
Unlike a gas power washer you might rent locally this one doesn't have interchangeable nozzles you'd fit on the end on the sprayer wand. You get two wands: One with a dial in variable nozzle that goes from a narrow pencil like setting; (quite focused, powerful) to a fan spray. The second is a "turbo" wand which is essentially the narrowly focused spray that continually moves in a circular pattern; (diameter changes in proximity of wand to surface being treated) so as not to damage the surface.
The "fan" setting is virtually useless. It's quite unfocused and is unable to deliver the intensity needed. If your out to remove old water seal treatments, natural graying and dirt from your decking the "Turbo" wand is your only choice.
The "Turbo" wand works quite well, although I did notice the rate at which the stream would oscillate was intermittent. It would slow and as it did it's ability to remove dirt was diminished.
These are shortcomings I could live with. However after it's second use the coupling on the high pressure hose where it attaches to the pump seized. Installed "hand tight" the cheap connector bound so that it had to be removed with channel locks and a small adjustable wrench. I basically destroyed the the coupling on the high pressure hose removing it. I also inadvertently wrenched loose a block between the pump and connector that has the feed an external reservoir; (soap etc.) that later presented a leak .
I could've patched this thing back together, gone to the hardware store, spent another $60 on parts to replace the wands with a single unit that utilizes interchangeable nozzles and gotten better results. Hacked off the old high pressure connector and replaced it with a brass fitting ( the unit comes with a plastic sleeved cheap pot-metal variety ). But I'm certain that shortly thereafter the hose reel would've broken/fallen apart or that there'd be an electrical problem ( Of note: "Why would the designers have the AC coming in next to the input for the water source???"). Really, it's just junk. Good for a use or two...and then it'll fall to pieces. Your better off renting a gas unit at $60 bucks a day.
