Tools and Hardware Reviews of Pro-Lab RA100 Radon Gas Do It Yoursef Test KitCustomer Review: Don't think I'll use this product again Summary: 3 Stars
We're in a 'max' radon county. Used this many years ago to check a room in our shop, which is on a concrete slab. Put it near a wall closest to the only opening through the concrete which was a tub drain hole in the bath. No Radon reported. Fine.
Building the house now. Crawlspace will be enclosed and conditioned, so in order to justify radon mitigation plans, we did a test. We built a plastic tent in the crawlspace to put the canisters in. We knew this would create a worst case scenario situation and concentrate the radon. Test came back at 60. Very high obviously, and expected. So then I call ProLab. After all, their test result form says give them a call if you have questions.
This is where it went down hill. I asked to speak to a specialist. Not sure what I got. Tried to outline our testing conditions: small 'tent' testing area, high humididity because no vapor barrier laid yet) etc. I didn't get very far because I was cut off and told to call my state air quality people... "we just give test results". Well ok, so why do you offer to answer questions? "Well, we need to get that stuff off of the literature". So DO IT instead of wasting my time and energy calling you.
You know what? There's an instrument available that apparently lasts forever, has good reviews, allows you to move the sensor around to different areas (like the crawl, basement, upstairs, downstairs, near a sump pump or problem area, etc.) watch for variations throughout the year in all conditions such as high humidity, and test with different air circulation conditions. So I'm ordering this sensor through Amazon in about five minutes... Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas Detector
If you live in a high radon county, you're probably better off just buying the Safety Siren Pro 3 sensor and testing your house yourself. You can be a hero and loan this thing out to friends too. Just makes more sense to spend about $130 for a permanent answer to radon testing, than to spend about $10 for this kit plus $30 for a lab fee. $40 for a one shot test, and then they just recommend you immediately buy another kit if you have a high reading. That would be $80 to confirm radon presence at one static point in the home.
Will this kit check for radon? Apparently so. Is it the best option? Well, maybe just once to confirm radon is present, BUT... where did you put the little test bottles? Was that one-shot bottle placement a good spot for sure, or do you have a hot spot in the home you don't know about? Plan on getting a Safety Siren 3 next. Do you know you have radon already? Then why bother with this little kit that just encourages you to buy more of them... just get the Safety Siren 3 for long term troubleshooting and monitoring and to learn your home's radon 'tendencies' under different condition.
About to install a radon mitigation system? Get the Safety Siren immediately, get readings in different areas for recommended time periods to serve as a control, and then begin mitigation. Get more readings... and see if things are better or if you need to take more mitigation measures. This just makes sense.
