Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas Detector

Customer Review: A great product for testing radon!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was using mailable charcoal radon testors that our city sells. I noticed the radon levels creeping above 10 pico-liries since last year. My home has a radon passive system installed by the home bulder, but decided to add a radon fan to reduce the levels below the recommended 4 pl amount by the EPA.

I purchased the Safety Siren electronic radon detector over a month ago and have been testing different rooms in the basement and on the main floor. The electronic detector indicated higher levels than the charcoal detectors, which made my decision to add the fan and reduce the radon levels in my home. The detector gives readings after two days of monitoring and gives an audible alarm besides giving the actual measured amount.

I live in Colorado that has a high radon gas area. Radon gas is nothing to fool with as it causes lung cancer, especially if you're a smoker. I never smoked, but I want to be safe knowing the dangers of radon gas. We lost one neighbor recently to lung cancer who smoked, so that is a warning for us all!

I feel this detector is worth the money as a great monitor and warning device like a fire or carbon monoxide detector. Even though it costs more than fire or carbon monoxide detectors, this detector ie worth the cost in saving lives in the long run. Amazon offers the lowest price compared to other retailers. I called Safety Siren's tech support after two weeks to confirm the detector operation, who was very quick, knowledgable and certainly helpful.

Customer Review: Great for monitoring trends

I just ran a 48-hour charcoal test on a whim, and a relatively high reading convinced me to buy a Safety Siren Pro 3. That was a year ago, and a year later I can say the Safety Siren is a very valuable tool. After about a year of testing with the Safety Siren I had a pretty good track record and learned my radon level was a bit high. On several occasions I ran the Safety Siren side-by-side with the charcoal test, and realizing that the Safety Siren averages over 7 days, not two, I can confirm its pretty accurate. If anything, the Safety Siren was reading about 20% too high, which is within its accuracy rating of 25%. This is also the accuracy rating of most charcoal tests.

Since these tests I bought a second Safety Siren and the two read very consistent between them. I've also had a mitigation system installed, the the Safety Siren confirmed within days that it was working.

For anyone testing for radon, realize that radon levels in your home vary greatly day to day. You can easily have a 8 or 10 reading with a 48-hour charcoal test when your average home levels are low if you happen to pick the wrong two days to test. The opposite is also true.

If nothing else, the Safety Siren lets you clearly see the radon peaks and valleys in your house so you know the best 48-hours to run your charcoal tests. Even better, run your Safety Siren for 6 months or longer, or run longer tests to get more accurate figures before jumping to mitigation.

Customer Review: Peace of mind...
Summary: 4 Stars

When we bought our house the radon results that came back were above WHO action level (2.9pC/L) but below EPA action level (4.0pC/L). I had two viles done and I think there were 3.3pC/L and 3.4pC/L.

I was a bit paranoid that my 48 hour snap shot might have been at a period where the levels were low. The basement also had been wide open to the outside air until the day prior (walk out basement w/o two windows open fully).

I installed this and the results are quite close to what I previously received, so I feel fairly confident in what it shows me.

Two notes--

1) The switch lets you select between "L" and "S". "L" is Long Term and "S" is Short Term, the idea here is that during rainy or other short term events you might want to see the Radon level from the past ~2 days, where as the "L" reading is more long term (I think 30 days?)

2) The "alarm" is not very loud... this is good, I was afraid it would be as loud as a smoke alarm or something, but it's not, it sounds more like sound you get when your coffee machine has finished it's brew cycle.

The unit includes a screw hole at the top for easy mounting. The LED read out is read and is easily to read from up to 10-15' away. I glance it at when I'm in the basement doing laundry.

It has a fairly long wire between the power brick and adapter as well which is convenient.

Customer Review: Most Excellent!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

The poor economy has caused my family to live in an old ranch home with a crawl space and I was worried about Radon. I tossed up the idea of having our home tested; however, as I read through the information about radon levels, I found that they fluctuate constantly. This makes sense now that I know it. Once I knew about the fluctuating levels, I really didn't want to spend around $165 to get our home tested just to know as soon as the test was done, the results were no longer accurate! So, I began my searches for a detector that would measure the levels constantly and came across this one. WOW....I sure am happy with the purchase!!! It cost less than a professional radon test, does more (continually measures the levels) AND I can let family and friends borrow it. At first the readings in our home were around 5, then they went up in the 6ish range and now they are at 4.1. All of the readings noted have been measured during the winter season, so I figure it will be even lower during the months we will have the windows open.

I am extremely happy with the purchase. It is tricky to find a place to put the detector with all of its restrictions; however, if there is a will, there is a way. The only thing I do not know is if the readings on the detector are accurate as compared to a professional test. I am going to assume it is accurate.

Customer Review: not legal in Illinois and terrible customer service
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this radon detector about 10 months ago, until recently I would have given it 4-5 stars, as I thought it was displaying an accurate radon level.I had not compared it to another radon detector.
I had it set on long term setting, and noticed that the level in my basement was reading high at 5.5. That is when I noticed that the detector was not working correctly. It would not switch between long and short term readouts. Regardless, I called VSI- a reputable company in Illinois that installed a mitigation system in our basement. They advised that I get a plain old carbon radon detector and that this system is actually not legal in the state of Illinois.
Meanwhile, I called family safety products and shipped the unit in to be replaced. Well, a month later, I have still not received a replacement. They say they have no record of me sending in the product. Thank God I sent it certified, so I was able to show proof, which they insisted I show.
also, the replacement they say, they will send is not warrantied for any extra length of time, but from the date of the original purchase- thus I only have a month or two to know if it works correctly. That's ridiculous!
Save your money and get a 10 dollar detector. If that does not satisfy you, get ten of them! You'll still save money and come out ahead.
