Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas Detector

Customer Review: Works as Advertised
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used this device for about a month now and am impressed. It has enabled me to test the radon levels in several areas of my home and has provided the necessary information for a decision on whether or not to purchase a mitigation system. I cannot be sure that it is 100% accurate, of course, but my readings are in line with neighbors and friends who live in this area, which is known to have high average levels of radon in the soil. I will probably proceed with installation of a mitigation system since the levels in my home range from 4.9 pCi/L in the Master Bedroom to 11.5 pCi/L in the unfinished basement. Fortunately, the levels in my home are lower than my nearby neighbors (one of whom had a test that measured nearly 40 pCi/L!). My only complaint about the device is that there is no way to silence the hourly "beep" (which is to notify you that a new reading has been calculated) - it's loud enough to wake a light sleeper like me if the device is placed in the bedroom.

Customer Review: What is the accurate reading who can you trust
Summary: 2 Stars

I had some concerns about radon in my home. I purchased the test that you send the canisters awy and I also purchased the Safety Siren . I decided to try the safety siren based on recommendations form other users. I am assuming I must have a defective unit since the following were my results.

The Safety Siren device came back with a reading within a few days of over 10. which settled down to 9.1 and when i disconnected the unit today it was in the 8.X range. At the same time I set the Safety Siren up I set up two of the mail away canisters for the recommended 4 day period. The results of this test came back at 4.1 and 4.5 depending on where the unit was placed. Concerned about the big difference and both numbers still being higher than they should be, I hired a professional to come in and use a calibrated unit. The results of his test were closer to 3.2, so I ask whose numbers do I trust, one of the canisters was placed in the same area as the Safety siren as well as the professional calibrated unit.

Customer Review: Great product

I am a realtor & deal with radon frequently. We recently built a new home & did a hardware store test kit & the results came back 5.1 pCi/L. I thought I would try passive methods to mitigate: seal cracks in floor, basement tub drain covered with plexi-glass & sealed & seal sump crock.

Instead of spending another $40 I thought I would try the electonic monitor. What I have found is that short term levels fluxuate quite a bit. it has ranged from under three to just under 6. The important thing is that the long term level is at about 3.5 after about 2 weeks of testing. The long term results are much more meaningful than a 2 day test. I have found that during/after rains, the level seems to elevate.

I may have a mitigation system installed at some point down the road to further reduce the levels & will have the electonic units results verified with another test.

I would reccommend this prooduct for any home owner who wants peace of mind about the radon levels in their home.

Customer Review: Don't waste money on 4-day test kits!
Summary: 5 Stars

One neighbor in my development had a high test off a 4-day test ($30 charge) and it sent the other homeowners out to buy more of the $30 test kits and test their own homes. I was one of those. I spent $30 to find out I was at 13. Then I did a bunch of online research and found out that 4-day tests are very misleading because they can spike for a variety of reasons like if the ground is frozen, or it rains. Both of those scenarios were in play during my test. Some of the neighbors went out and spent money on abatement and a few more tests, so they are at $90 (+ abatement) and I assume they'll be doing more tests periodically to see if the abatement is still working. I got the Pro 3 and have had it going for a week now. My test kit for $30 said my reading was 13, but after 48 hours with the Pro 3 my first reading was about half that, 7.7. Then it went down to 4.8, and now it went back up to 8.0, all within 7 days. Why not buy the Pro 3 and get a more accurate reading over time?

Customer Review: I will now live a long prosperous life....
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this Radon detector on a hunch. I thought it would be nice to know what our basement readings would be over time. I read Radon levels can change with the seasons, and a digital meter would be better than sending in the "one time" spot tests. I was utterly shocked to find our readings were 7 times what was deemed safe. We have just invested 150k $ in a remodel to our 1914 Craftsman and planned to live here a long time. I never would have dreamed we have a problem.

I spent 129 bucks on this unit which probably extended my life...and,saved my entire family's lungs from cancer....Once we get our house mitigated all my nieghbors want to borrow it to test their basements...
Potentially this unit could save our nieghbors as well.

Was it worth it?

Yeah!!!!!. what is a 129 bucks for my life ?

I can't say how pleased I am. (I'm going to be around to review lots more stuff now.)
