Tools and Hardware Reviews of Safety Siren Pro Series HS71512 3 Radon Gas DetectorCustomer Review: Better safe than sorry Summary: 5 Stars
A couple years ago I used the 2-day canister-type radon test which gave a reading of 4.0. This unit reads 6.0-7.0, indicating we have a radon problem which we will have to fix. I do not know its accuracy, but it seems to be in line with the previous test, as we have sealed up the house more since the last tests. It's nice to be able to move it from the basement to the main floor of the house and check the radon levels in any room. In any way, I'm happy to own it so after we install a radon mitigation system, we can continuously monitor its effectiveness without having to constantly buy tests, send them in, and wait for results, which could become as expensive as this unit. Only downside is it was a little expensive, but then again, it can save our health. The measured levels do change throughout the day/week, which I read is normal, the amount of radon can change with weather conditions (wet soil, wind, temperature, windows open/closed, etc).
Customer Review: Great Device - a must have for your basement Summary: 5 Stars
The device is very well constructed and remarkably, "Made in the USA". The unit allows for short term and long term readings, as radon levels vary seasonally, and over time. I have carefully followed the unit readings and on average, it pretty much tracks the readings I received from a few random charcoal canister tests performed at different times during the year. I have a large basement and noticed that levels seem to vary even in different areas of the basement,so I will likely buy more of these units in the future. If you use the basement as living space (as I do) ,this device is a must. Very accurate and highly recommended.
One question I do have that perhaps other can comment on - the instructions recommend an annual calibration for commercial use, optional for home use...If anyone knows how often this calibration is really needed, I would appreciate the feedback.
Customer Review: Worth the money if you have radon. Summary: 5 Stars
We have a radon mitigation system in our house. The radon fan died (just out of warranty) and I bought a new fan to replace it. Then we were faced with multiple uses of canister type radon measurements to determine if the system was working again. We decided it was worth trying the Safety Siren Pro radon gas detector since the price was reasonable. The radon and home inspector professionals use instruments that cost $1000's. We plugged it in (6/24/10) and let it run a few days before installing the new fan. Then we watched as the short-term radon reading dropped from about 18 to about 1 pC/L over a period of 7 days and line out in the 1 to 1.5 range. The long-term average reading comes down more slowly.
I think it is appropriate for someone who already has a radon mitigation system. If you just need to know if you have radon, get one of the canister exposure kits.
Customer Review: Worthwhile Investment Summary: 4 Stars
We discovered that we had high radon when a friend lent this detector to us. We purchased our own and have been able to monitor the place where we were living and to help others see if they need to purchase one of these.
The statement that there are no early symptoms from radon is a lie. We experienced many unexplained issues until we got out of the radon and started to recover. Our bird and rabbit died from the exposure before we knew about the radon. So if you are in a home that has a basement or a slab foundation, it is worth checking into.
I have one complaint: The front label sticker is off-center and partly blocks the light. I would think for something in this price range that quality control would be better. While it is a cosmetic issue rather than a functional one, it makes the unit look cheap.
Customer Review: WORKS! Verified by radon gas test by home inspector. Summary: 5 Stars
Product does what it says. Purchased following a home inspection result of high radon levels in the basement (14 pCi/l). We purchased this with next day delivery to verify prior to remediation. The meter gave us approximately the same reading (13.6 pCi/l). We went ahead with the remediation and installed a fan system. We were able to reset the meter very simply with the instructions and get a new reading within the 2 days that verified we were still above the limit before we even received the test results from the company. I am very impressed. At first, I purchased this only for my entertainment as I am studying radiation health physics, however, I found it to be a very useful tool and we have used it at mulitple locations. I recommend this to anyone that has a basement. Well worth the cost as you can reset and reuse again and again!
