Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PBH-1R Ceiling-Mounted Bike LiftCustomer Review: Great product for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I just put two of these up in the garage this weekend. After reading several reviews on various models and brands, I decided on these. I found no problem with the screws provided. You just need a high-quality phillips bit (I used a #2 bit in my drill), and you need to keep a steady pressure on the screw while you drive it into the wood. I would also recommend pre-dilling the holes. There is far more rope than you'll need in most cases. My garage ceiling is approx 11' high, and I had at least 3' of extra rope that I cut. Also, use a match to melt the end of the rope to prevent fraying after cutting it.
I also elected to mount the two pulley brackets to a 2x4, which I then mounted to the ceiling. To me this seemed to make more sense since the distance between the handlebars and seat back are not going to fall on 16" (or 24") centers to match your ceiling joists. I also think that it makes it much easier to line up the pulleys with each other and to adjust them later, if you wish to hand a different bike.
The rope locking mechanism works surprisingly well. My biggest criticisms are:
1) The instructions for routing the rope properly through the locking mechanism could be improved. I had several minutes of trail-and-error before I understood how this was supposed to work. The picture in the instructions and verbiage are not very helpful.
2) The wall cleat used to wrap the rope could be larger. My ceiling is quite tall, and I have a lot of rope that needs to be wrapped on the cleat. The cleat barely holds the rope once you hoist the bike in place.
3) There are no screws supplied for the cleats. This seems like a minor thing, but no one wants to start a project with an immediate trip to the hardware store for something that could easily be added to the included parts list.
All things considered, it's an excellent product for the price. I would strongly recommend it.
