Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PBH-1R Ceiling-Mounted Bike LiftCustomer Review: Exactly What I was Looking For and Easy to Install Summary: 5 Stars
Looked at many types of solutions to store bikes while not in use and that anyone in my family could use. Started with hooks from ceiling, but only I could reach them. Looked at bike stands, but that still took up valuable floor space. I have 10 foot garage ceilings and a 3rd stall where they would fit perfectly! Installation took less than an hour. I installed 3 of these and the last one took only about 30 minutes to install. A electonic stud finder helped greatly and drilling a pilot hole helped keep the screw from stripping out when drilling. These aren't the best quality screws, very easy to strip out. Overall, couldn't be any happier and I have my floor space back!! :-)
Customer Review: Great Product, Except the (Cheap) Rope Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great product and idea. The brackets seem very strong and the product worked perfectly as advertised. That said, the rope that accompanies the product is either too cheap or not the correct type for the product's design. If you only plan to lift the bike up to the ceiling once a year, then you will probably be fine with the rope that comes with the product. However, daily or even weekly use will likely burn through the rope quickly. After lifting my bike one time, I noted a fray in the rope--I believe it occurred where the "locking mechanism" locked onto the rope. I intend to find a more durable rope/cable very soon. No five-star rating because of the rope.
Customer Review: Great System Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great system. Simple to install and use. We are now able to utilize space in our garage that we otherwise wouldn't be able to store anything in. We have 2 of these lifts and have both hung on the same rafter in our garage. The system automatically distributes the weight as we raise or lower the bikes so they can be next to eachother without any problems. We are watching the cord because of some of the other reviews, however, we have yet to notice any fraying. We are using the system about 3 times a week to pull our bikes down, so I would expect to see any problems by now. I'm not sure if the manufacturer has changed this, but we have not had a problem.
Customer Review: A good product but not necessary. Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this contraption to keep my new bike from getting beat up. It took a few trips up and down the ladder to get it right. It works ok but it takes a half mile of rope to hoist the bike up. It looks like something the Egyptians invented to build the pyramids. What bothered me most was all the rope I had to screw with. After I used it a couple times I took it down and went to HD and bought two bike hangers for about 2.50 ea. They are really big hooks covered in rubber that screw to the ceiling. Now I just lift the bike up and hook the front wheel, then lift and hook the back wheel. It's a whole lot faster and you don't have all that stuff hanging down all over.
Customer Review: Not only for bikes...for kayaks too!! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this on sale for $19 thinking that if it didn't work for my kayak, I'd use it for my bike and there would be harm done. Well, this thing is perfect for the kayak. Sure, there aren't hydraulic lifts or anything to help you lift it so it takes some effort, but for $19, who can complain?! The only modification for lifting the kayak was turning the hooks 180 degrees so that they face outward.
We installed the lift above and perpendicular to the girders so that the kayak could be flush with the ceiling. It works like a charm. I'm sure the same could be done for bike use which would allow for another foot of space below the bike.
