Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PBH-1R Ceiling-Mounted Bike LiftCustomer Review: good product / difficult installation Summary: 4 Stars
the product is good and for the price on amazon, it is great. the locking unit works very well and i'm not worried at all about the bikes falling. Very easy to use, once installed.
Cons:
- installation cud have been a little easier. and you need to ensure u either put them into beams, or nail up a 2x4 into the beams, then screw the mounts into the 2x4. The odds are not good on a typical adult mountain bike that the mounts will match up w/ yr beams. Build extra time for installation.
- the hooks cud catch a little better. the hooks for the seat of the bike dont' sit too well, and when the bike is hanging 3 foot over your favorite car in the garage, u don't want to be nervous.
Overall, i do recommend the product. and the cons aren't that big a deal. installation isn't too bad, as long as u are competent, and the hooks work, but they cud be better.
Customer Review: A generic product sold elsewhere for less Summary: 3 Stars
This bike lift works well. The installation, however, was frustrating. I happened to have a piece of 3/4"x3 1/2" lumber, which was perfect for attaching the lift to the ceiling. Still, the screws that came with the package were of the wrong type and poor quality. Their heads got stripped easily. Fortunately, I had some #8x2" and #8x3" wood screws that did the job.
The overriding reason why one should not bother with this product is the fact that it is sold by another manufacturer at a lower price. Because I have two bikes, I also ordered RAD Cycle Products Ceiling Mount Bike Hoist - Bicycle Hoists just out of curiosity. They turn out to be identical in design and construction. Only the paints differ slightly. There is thus no reason to buy Racor.
Customer Review: Great storage for a Neat Price Summary: 4 Stars
I got this one for 20 bucks with free shipping. The shipment arrived within a week (much less time then what the website said). It took me like an hour to set up the whole thing in my basement.
Couple of comments about the packaging and instructions. The box was all torn and cheap quality. But since the product was not damaged, I'll overlook it. The instructions on the other hand were not very clear. You have to read it a few times and guess the rest.
Tools required include: Screwdriver (Preferably a power-drill), measuring tape, Tall ladder, pencil, Stud-finder (trust me you need this one, since the load is pretty heavy when you try to lift the bike).
Good product. Good quality. Rope quality also not too bad as per other comments. Highly recommend this for those with a small garage and lots to store.
Customer Review: Great Bike Storage!! Summary: 4 Stars
Although the instructions were a little lacking, I like this product. They said to measure the distance from the front of the handlebar "7" to the rear of seat and use that measurement to locate the hangers on the ceiling. They neglected to tell you HOW to use the measurement but I figured it out. On the rear hanger (2 pulleys) mark a spot with a sharpie, centered between the 2 pulleys. Now attach the rear hanger to the ceiling, be sure your rear tire will clear any obstructions (like... a wall! :). The measurement will be the distance from the centering mark on the rear hanger to the forward most hole on the front hanger. It took me about 1/2 hour to hang the 1st one and about 10 minutes to hang the 2nd. I now have 2 bikes off the floor of the garage and out of the way. Great product!! Check it out for yourself!! Customer Review: It Works - but could be better Summary: 5 Stars
Put this in my high ceiling garage. it works... I had to attach a board across my beams to accomodate this lift. Plus my ceiling is rather steep angle. I was going to try to compensate for angle but didn't - too much work. Instructions are weak... not terrible, but I had trouble understanding a few things and kept re-reading - was not as clear as could be on how to thread the nylon string through the pulleys... I also wish it had adjustable mounts to accomodate angled ceilings better. It would be nice, too, if bracket mounts were made to screw into 2x4 ceiling joists.
If you have a solid ceiling, especially a flat ceiling, these will be easy to install, if you have a high open ceiling, especially with steep angle, it will require more work and improvising... but once installed, keeps my bike up out of the way.
