I bought 4 of these bike lifts and they work great! They seemed to have improved the rope and hardware, so make sure to read the RECENT reviews (sort by date) to get a better feel for the product. I almost passed on it because the default view wasn't by date, so I read the older less-glowing reviews at first.
After installing all 4 of the lifts, I rest assured that the bikes will stay up there (by adding some velcro so that the hooks can't ever fall off the seats, even during an earthquake -- I live in CA). And now my wife will be able to take her and the kid's bikes out too whenever I'm at work.
These were JUST what I was looking for...and reasonable prices here on Amazon too!

I'm glad to find this ceiling-mounted bike lift now comes with a much improved braided cord. I'd recommend this bike mounting arrangement if you have the ceiling height in your garage. I have a 9-foot ceiling and I'd recommend that be the minimum to provide sufficient clearance over the car or van. I've bought and installed an older versions of this ceiling-mounted bike lift liked it in spite of the older coarser braided cord. The pulley mechanism is simple and easy to operate. Installation tip: I found it easier to pre-drill pilot holes into the studs first before fastening the brackets down with screws using a cordless drill with a clutch. Spacing the brackets approximately 30 inches apart should be adequate for most bikes.Customer Review: Spacesaving Bike Storage

I bought two of the Racor Ceiling mounted bike lifts to get our bikes off the garage floor where space is it a premium. The instructions were clear but I found the supplied wood screws to be a little short when you have 5/8" drywall on the ceiling that must be penetrated before reaching the ceiling joists. For safety I bought longer wood screws to make sure I had a deeper penetration into the wood ceiling joists above my garage. The most difficult part of the installation is locating the studs and making sure you are screwing into the center of the stud for maximum support of the bike lift. The pulley system for raising and lowering the bike works very well. It took me about one hour to install each Racor lift.Customer Review: Easy setup, and works great

I set this up myselft in under 10 mins without any problems.
Everything worked smooth and easy from the first try.
Bike it totally secure, after some reviews said bike doesnt stay on very well i raise my bike up and grabbed it by the rear wheel and yanked it back and forth and couldnt get it to come down.
I think getting the spacing of the brackets is the important part. Just measure from the front of the handle bars to rear of seat and set the spacing of the hooks not the brackets to that spacing and you shouldnt have any problems. mines rock solid.
Dont know if they changed the rope or not but the rope included with mine if perfect, seems strong very clean(no frays) and no problems.

As a female I put this bike lift up myself. The only problems I had was with my stud finder on our textured ceiling in our garage. I did follow another viewer's suggestion and buy screws from Menards rather than use the ones included in the kit. I bought 5 of these and all of our ropes were fine, no frays. I would recommend measuring your ceiling to make sure your car will fit under when your bike is raised because I was surprised with our high garage ceiling how low the bike is (I can barely walk under it). The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars was because of the cheap quality of the screws, but heck for $17 and free shipping I can afford to buy some better screws. I LOVE MY FLOOR SPACE!!
