Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor PHL-1R Pro HeavyLift 4-by-4-Foot Cable-Lifted Storage RackCustomer Review: Storage Rack Summary: 4 Stars
The storage unit was exactly as advertised, fairly easy to assemble and attach to the garage ceiling. However, the lag bolts intended to secure the assembly to the ceiling were "soft," made of poor quality steel and I had to replace them because the heads twisted off in the joists even with a pilot hole drilled. Also, the lifting mechanism (gear box) worm screw was stripped and as a result it was impossible to crank the storage up or down. This may have been a returned unit to the retailer given the condition of the box upon arrival. I contacted the original equipment manufacturer and they replaced the gear box without cost within a week. The lift is now installed and works as advertised - albeit the 4 star rating comes from all the self help required completing the task.
Customer Review: Works Great! However, you need to be handy. Summary: 4 Stars
This lift was exactly what I've been looking for to store my large/heavy loop-loc ingound pool cover over the summer months. It's very solid and I have no doubt that it will last for many years. With that said, you need to be handy and be able to think outside the box for installation. As others have recommended, you might want to consider buying lag bolts from the home center as the included bolts are in metric. Also, there is maybe 1" wiggle room on the 48" dimension. I was fortunate that my joists were right on 48" but I still had to build a level railing system as I installed the lift in my shed which has a pitched roof. It turned out great and will save me hours of backbreaking frustration every spring and fall. Maybe I'll upload a photo of my completed intall.
Customer Review: Excellent Lift; Minor design flaw Summary: 4 Stars
As stated by many, this product is worth the investment. Can be raised/lowered by hand, or by attaching your power-drill to the handle - a nice feature. I have 14 foot ceilings and this works great. Difficult to put up by one-person, but can be done. The center "axle" does need extra bracing - a simple piece of angle iron does the trick, but should be done. Otherwise, you can see the axle bowing in the middle when under tension (the axle is actually 2 pieces of steal pushed and bolted together). Additionally, the included lag-bolts do not appear long or strong enough. I purchased longer lags and drilled those into the joists. Other than that, a great product. I would recommend putting up more than one if your garage can accomodate it.
Customer Review: Great storage solution for the cost Summary: 5 Stars
I read all the reviews before buying this rack. It took me a little over a hour to put it together & get it up. My garage ceiling is about 9 feet high, finished with drywall, and joists are 16 inch on center. The lag bolts worked fine for my application, just drilled each before like the directions said. I used an air powered wratchet to put it together & to hang it which worked very well. I have a small generator, push lawn mower, and a bunch of coolers on it. It is not the easiest thing to crank up, but down is a breeze. I am a bit surprised the lags did not come with washers, but otherwise it is very nice for the cost. Now that I see it in action, I will likely buy a second to put next to it. Can never have enough storage space :-)
Customer Review: Good idea, but poor parts. I'd buy again. Summary: 3 Stars
The concept is great. I enjoy not having to get on a ladder and bring heavy items down over my head. The drill connection is good but by hand is fine too. It isn't "easy" but considering there is +200 pounds on mine I wasn't expecting it to be easy. It takes about 30-45 sec to raise or lower. I'd recommend a female use the drill though. Getting level and plumb was a pain. I had to redrill some of the holes and I used plywood on top of the grates for stability. I also used a few extra lag bolts that I bought because ...the thing is holding +200 pounds over my truck. I figured it was worth a couple bucks in bolts just to make extra sure it wasn't coming down. I'd buy another. It does take a good hour or so to put together but I did it alone.
