Tools and Hardware Reviews of Racor Pro PLB-2R Two-Bike Gravity Freestanding Bike StandCustomer Review: Good for road bikes Summary: 3 Stars
This bike rack is great for some and truly bad for others. It will work great if you have two light road bikes. If your bikes are pushing 20 pounds, things are going to get interesting. Like other reviewers' have said, this is a lot of shaped metal for $50. If you are creative and have access to Gorilla Tape, tools, and a drill, most of the problems with the poor fabrication can be easily modified. When I received my rack (that's what she said) the top part was not even drilled out for the handles. Customer service was great and a new drilled section was shipped at no cost. Overall if you are looking for a no hassle fix look elsewhere, if you don't mind making it work, it's a cheap fix.
One last note, if you are putting some expensive bikes on this thing you might want to reinforce the end of the handles because the welds are extremely weak.
Customer Review: Won't last more than a couple of years Summary: 1 Stars
I've had this stand for a few years. Yes, it's wall-supported (I didn't need to drill; the base's big "U" has been pretty stable on my carpet), and yes it extends a couple feet out from the wall at the base (but don't your handlebars?). That's no problem for me.
My problem is the crappy plastic receivers in the arms where the hooks are bolted. After enough times lifting bikes into and out of the hooks, the bolts just pull out of the stripped plastic. It happened first with the lower hooks (okay, I was hanging a tandem, it's a little heavy), but the upper rack's just been holding a relatively light-weight hybrid (I never kept my road bike on this stand; I keep it on the trainer when I'm not riding it).
I'm buying a da Vinci which doesn't appear to have the swinging hooks (which require the bolt-and-receiver system), but simple arms.
Customer Review: Not free standing Summary: 3 Stars
The product says free standing and that's why I bought it. It is easy to assemble. It is not too heavy. When assembled and without bikes, it falls backward and must be positioned against a wall. That's not free standing. With hanging bikes it does not fall backwards and is free standing, but then feels like it could accidently fall forward without much effort if the bikes are pulled off instead of lifted off or say a child were to pull on the bikes. The package came with a long wood screw and long toggle bolt so the rack can be secured to walls. So, with hanging bikes it could accidently fall over if not attached to a wall and after removing the bikes it will definitely fall backwards unless it is against a wall. Therefore, you must place it against a wall and secure it. If you don't have a problem with that you will probably like this product.
Customer Review: Poor design, not freestanding Summary: 1 Stars
I got this bike stand as a gift for Christmas. I assembled it and the stand just falls forward. I thought maybe it was too light, so I placed one bike on the stand, and it made it worse. It is a poor design. It is very top heavy, so it just falls forward immediately after I assembled it. It is definitely not free standing. I wanted to place the stand up against some cabinets, so I was not about to drill a hole into the cabinet to hold the stand. The product description says that wall mounting is optional, but that is not true. I would say that wall mounting is REQUIRED. I returned this item to Amazon and will lose out on a Christmas gift. It's better than keeping an item that would be totally useless in my garage, unless I wanted to use it to hang coats (still would need to mount it to the wall though). I do not recommend this bike stand.
Customer Review: probably a 3.5 rating is more like it... Summary: 3 Stars
This rack comes packed nicely. Setup is a breeze. We have 2 TREK bikes: one is a men's 18.5" frame and the other a women's 14.5" frame. The rack will not perfectly accomodate these 2 bikes. The bike on top touches the bike on the bottom, even when both bikes are place at the extremes of the rack. In fact, it probably is not the best choice for 2 full size men's.
With these 2 bikes, the rack will NOT stand on its own. It must be placed against the wall. Even then, it is a little wobbly, so I anchored it to the drywall with the included hardware. Only then is it stable enough to carry the weight of 2 bikes.
OVERALL, I would say its an average purchase. For the price, it suits us well. There are probably better out there, but until it rips off from the wall and smashes into our car, I can't complain. :)
