Tools and Hardware Reviews of Range Kleen WKT4162 66-Battery Organizer with Removable Tester

Customer Review: Uneven Organizer
Summary: 3 Stars

What can one say about a battery organizer other than how well it helps you organize your item? In this organizer's case, it does help me organize my batteries, but has a really big issue! The batteries don't properly fit into the organizer.

I took a photo of this problem and placed it on my Flickr account. The photo is at: [...] You can click on the "All Sizes" link to look at larger and the original size. The original size shows the problem very well on my monitor, but your mileage may vary.

I purchased two of these organizers because of how many batteries I own. Both units have the exact same issue with AA batteries. When you put a AA battery into a slot, it won't go all the way down the slot. The depth sometime is almost to the bottom and other times it is barely enough to hold the battery, when placed on a wall. The batteries aren't at fault. Why, do I say this as a fact? I can take the same battery and it will go down different lengths in each slot. I can take another battery and the same occurs, but also you'll notice the depths of these subsequent batteries are similar for each slot (even though you're using different batteries). In other words, the individual slots determine how far down a battery will go before you can't push it down any further.

Finally, this problem causes issues when removing batteries from some of the slots and the unit is on the wall.

In the photo, you'll notice the AAA batteries all fit perfectly in their slots. The manufacturer can get the slots the right size; they just didn't do it for the AA batteries.

I'm giving the unit 3 stars, as it is good organizer and the tester is great to have. I must deduct the two stars (almost was three stars deducted), because the some of the slots won't let an appropriately size battery to slide all the way into it.

Customer Review: Love This (as long as the tester is accurate) - Saved more money than I spent

I am trying to get organized. One tiny thing that has been an issue is battery organization, so I bought this. My 2 big issues were storing batteries and knowing their charge. This item stores more batteries than I typically have on hand. And it's tester helps me decide if the charge is still there. Perfect!

I've been saving my old batteries for 5+ years in a container. I had a collection of 146 'dead' batteries and my container was full. Time to recycle! But first, I tested them for charge since I wasn't really sure how many were truly dead. Perhaps I had thrown good ones away by accident?? WOW!!!! I tested them all and only 77 were dead (or low) and 69 were still "good" according to the tester. I considered the battery 'dead' if it tested "replace", "low", or borderline low/good.

If the tester is accurate, and those 69 batteries are still 'good', that's quite a lot of error on my part. I am hoping the tester was accurate as I'll try to use those batteries. Perhaps they will work on low-charge items (like remotes) but weren't good enough for all those noisy kid toys we recently purged. Or perhaps they're just fine for anything. Time will tell as it'll take me a while to use them all.

Currently, this unit is sitting on my counter. Soon it will be installed on the wall at the top of the basement stairs -- pretty much out of site but convenient.

I tested AAA, AA, C, D, 9v, and button batteries.

PLEASE recycle dead batteries -- don't throw in your trash. Stores that sell batteries are supposed to recycle them for you too (like WalMart). Just get a little container started for dead batteries and you'll see it's not a big deal to recycle them every few years.

Customer Review: Does it's job!

It does exactly what it says - organizes batteries.

The battery tester is a very nice feature that I didn't think I needed, but now that I have it, it's wonderful! No more batteries of questionable power sitting around!

The color (not that it really matters) is ugly and I wish it was black or white instead. It's not something you're going to hang in your living room in plain view anyway, so like I said before, it really doesn't matter.

We usually have a lot of AA and AAA batteries (infant/toddler child toys, baby monitors), so I wish it held a few more of each of those.

I have one size of battery that does not fit into it and that is the "N" size (a type of medical battery i believe, though I use it in a vibrating teething ring for my daughter). So if you're wanting it for those, just be prepared to put them in the AA spot and leave the space next to it open, so you can stick your finger in that one to slide the N battery out. But the N size battery (and button batteries for that matter) are so small that they are easy to store in a drawer somewhere instead.

Wonderful for getting battery packages and strewn about batteries out of a drawer and organized up on the wall! (I have yet to mount mine on the wall, but even without putting it up, I already love it.

Customer Review: Handy item.
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a handy item that I wish I'd had a long time ago. It is made of durable plastic and has a built-in battery tester that will test every type of battery the set holds.

The battery tester can be a little clumsy to use and I think it could have been better implemented as a sort of 'vice' where you place the battery on its side and push the tester end up to the bottom of the battery. Instead, this has an L-shaped arm that lifts up and you have to carefully place the battery between the contact on the bottom of the device and the top of the arm. This because more frustrating when you're using C and D sized batteries.

It also has a compartment that pulls out and holds small watch batteries.

I also wish there were a better way to present the rack. You can either lay it flat or attach it to a wall. Laying it flat consumes a lot of space, but I can't attach this to a wall in my apartment or at my office, so there's no other choice. Perhaps if they could simply have widened the bottom so it could be a sort of "foot" that would allow the device to stand freely on its own.

That said, the price is not bad and if you have a lot of batteries in a drawer or box somewhere, this will make finding a set of batteries that aren't dead or half dead much easier.

Customer Review: Good battery holder
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased two of these to replace an older battery holder that I kept in the garage. My old unit had the problem of "dropping" batteries when I pulled out some to use. This was especially evident with the 9v batteries. This new unit is great. I wall mounted both of them side-by-side and am able to quickly get to all of the batteries that I need. They are held snugly, but not tight. I have had no issues with batteries coming out or dropping off of the unit. One unit would suffice for most of my batteries, but I try to buy them in bulk at Costco and sometimes I need to hold a few extra ones. The tester works well. It's a bit strange to get the batteries into the tester when it's off the unit, but it's no big deal. The design allows you to test any size battery, which is nice.

I've had the unit for about 4 months now and would buy it again if needed. In fact, one of my friends had commented on my old unit and how he was wanting to buy one. When I got these, I purchsed an extra one and gave it to him and he loves it.
