Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern

Customer Review: Terrific Little Lantern
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a terrific little lantern.

I don't do camping so I can't comment on their adaptability for that use. I do find them indispensable for back up light when the power goes out at home though.

They give off a lot of light and will run for a long time on just three D-Cell batteries. If you use rechargeable batteries and add a solar battery charger even two week power outages like we had with Hurricane Ike won't leave you in the dark.

These little lanterns have replaced all of my old kerosene/lamp-oil lanterns. There is no flame, they don't give off fumes or need dangerous fuel, and they are small, light to carry, and rugged. Technology moves on.

I have several for home use and I even keep two of them in my car.

If you've ever had to change a tire in the dark with a flashlight that keeps rolling around you'll be glad that you added one or two of these to your emergency equipment in the trunk along with the jumper cables, spare V-Belts, hoses, clamps, and some tools. With two of them I can have light on either side of me while I change that flat or replace a belt or hose.

Maybe some day Ray-O-Vac will recognize the potential sales opportunity they are missing by not having an equally rugged carry case for these lanterns. It would keep them from being damaged when jostled around in the trunk. They could even market them as EMERGENCY LANTERN KITS for cars...hint-hint-hint...

Ray-O-Vac did good with this one. You can't have too many of these very versatile neat little lanterns.

Customer Review: great lantern
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a couple of these lanterns during a gold box offer. We get frequent power outages where we live, which often last for many hours. I wanted a something that could light up a room during a power outage. I wasn't sure what to expect from these lanterns, but I was very pleasantly surprised when they arrived and I saw how solid and bright they are. The lantern has sturdy construction, and the brighter of the two light settings is very bright. Since the bulbs are LED I anticipate the battery life will be exceptional.

My major criticisms of this lantern are actually minor. There are no instructions provided with the lantern, so it took me a minute or two to figure out that you have to twist off the base to install the batteries. There are arrows inside the base plate and battery compartment of the lantern that have to match up to replace the base, although I found it easier to do by feel. There is a constantly blinking LED on the front of the lantern even when the lantern is turned off. I suspect this is to let you know the lantern has working batteries in it, but it is a waste of battery life. Even still, a single LED draws very little power, so I doubt it drains the battery much, and I have let the batteries stay in the lantern.

Overall, this lantern is a very worthwhile purchase. It gives off a lot of light, and can easily be carried around with its handle. It is much more useful than a flashlight for a power outage situation. I'm glad I bought two of them, and if I had realized how good they really were I would have bought more.

Customer Review: Bright li'l sucker for what it is
Summary: 4 Stars

First things first, I really don't understand why so many people are making a huge deal about the battery lid. Seriously, folks, you have to take the darn thing OFF in the first place to insert the batteries; maybe pay attention? On top of that the important bits are called out in red and, IMHO, couldn't be anymore straight forwards. Line up the red bits using common sense, close lid, twist, done. Was that so hard?

As for the latern itself, it's small! Really didn't pay attention to the dimmensions, so when the box arrived I actually thought it couldn't be right. More the fool me, but no matter. Popped in three D-cell batteries, turned off the lights and was immediately impressed. Dug out our old (4 year old or so?) barely used Coleman dual-tube fluorescent latern, turned it on and was even more disappointed with it than before. This Rayovac LED lantern wipes the floor with said Coleman; which IMHO is good enough to read a book by and that's it.

Took this li'l guy camping with us and, while it's no where close to the brightness of a propane lantern, I was always pretty darn happy with it. In fact I had gone through the trouble of getting a new globe, mantels and propane for our main lantern... and never used it once. Truth be told, am considering buying a few more of these and just leaving the ol' propane unit at home from now on. YMMV. For the cost, $25 as of right now, I think it's a great little lantern.

Customer Review: All That I Wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this lantern; because when compared to all the others that I looked at - it was smaller, lighter, more durable, and used less batteries but provided more light. After using it on a 2 week camping trip - it didn't let me down.

When we lost "house" power in our RV, I placed it on the kitchen table to play cards. The couple that we traveled with complained that it was too bright. Rather than turn it down to the lower level, I unscrewed the top and used the bottom hook to hang it upside down from the ceiling. This application provided more than enough light to play cards and see everything else within the entire RV. It was no longer "too bright"; because it was above eye level.

I also hooked it to a tree branch above our picnic table. It provided enough light to cook on the camping stove and eat dinner for four. At the end of the camping trip, I couldn't detect any depreciation in battery power. The couple that we traveled with has been camping for years, with all kinds of equipment. Yet, they too are going to buy this lantern from Amazon.

I'm going to buy the Coleman Multi-Purpose Lantern Stand in case the next time we go out, there isn't a tree branch above our picnic table. I'm also going to buy another one of these lanterns to put in our emergency kit in case there's ever a prolonged power outage at home. With two of them, we'll have "his" and "her" lanterns.

Customer Review: Bright, compact, BRIGHT.
Summary: 5 Stars

This lantern is great! I wish I'd bought several, as they were a tremendous bargain for the price I bought them. I love lights, and had been searching for a lantern for camping or emergency lighting. Most other lanterns had shameful run-time and were not energy efficient; this one runs on LED's and lasts like a tank.

I ran a few stress tests on the handle, and everything checks out fine. It folds down to fit flush against the lantern when it's not up for use, and is very durable.

The hi/lo settings are minimal; I usually use it on low because of the longer runtime, and I can barely tell the difference in light. I primarily use these indoors, rather than outside (I have used it outside, and while it's 300 lumens, it's 300 lumens in a 360 degree setting, not being focused into a beam, so things are still fairly dark in an open area) and am very satisfied with the light coverage.
A note, the light IS a pure/bluish light, which some people find cold and hard on the eyes, rather than the yellow warmer light that traditional lanterns afford.

Because of the compact nature of this lantern, it is easily portable and can stash away tidily without much fuss. With a long lasting battery life, this lantern is well worth the money.

Also, the flashing LED-the draw on that thing is nothing at all. Don't worry about it.
