Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED LanternCustomer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I received this lantern today and I am very pleased with its quality of construction. It is sturdily built and it should withstand many years of use. I cannot understand why others appear to have a problem with battery installation. All you need to do is to align the tab located on the battery compartment cover plate with the notch located inside the lower housing (adjacent to two red arrows) and presto, the unit is reassembled. I did it on my first try in a matter of a few seconds. The lantern is bright enough to adequtely light a 600 square foot room in my mountain cabin. Some reviews note that the "flashing locator lamp" will eventually drain the batteries, but I expect that will take a very long time. The same flashing indicator system is used in home smoke detectors and in those units, a single 9 volt battery lasts for several years (smoke detector batteries should be replaced every 12 months). The convenience of being able to locate the lantern in a dark room or dark tent is worth the cost of occasional battery replacement. If one needs a lantern that will be stored for an indefinite period of time, wind-up charging lanterns that require no changeable batteries are available. The small hook located on the underside of the base for hanging the lantern in a tent, is adequate to support the weight of the lantern. I rate this unit with 5 stars!
Customer Review: half the size of other's almost twice as bright @ 300 lumans Summary: 5 Stars
Con's If hung upside down a dark circle undrneath it. But upright the bottom is well covered The Batterie lid is hard to line up the red mark's inside have to line up exactly. Pro's It's far brighter than any other led light on the market.300 lumans's almost twice as bright and half the size.I'm able to utilize the packiging case I cut the sides and glue velcro on the top to open it up works way good as a storage case:) ps I have allot of them for people I let borrow my stuff so I get them all back when they can see that there's an empty case and that the lantern is missing IE.I label them 1of 8, 2 of 8 etc:)Last but not least the the coverage is smooth just like a light bulb where others like colman have line's and there bigger and more expensive with about half the lumans :( Dont know how long the battery's will really last the claim of 150 hr's in my opion @ best must be on low. but the flashing green led will hardly use a thing.I know it's safe to store as an emergency light for a very long time.I've worked in this sort of field so I know. I'm keeping batterie's in all winter and this spring time how many hour's the 3 battery's will last on high. it's great it only use's 3 d cell. I am way impressed love them. Looked a long time for one like this.hope this helped Amazon Best price but w/o batts.@ $25 when I bought them. hope this helped BB Rx
Customer Review: This sucker rocks!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Let me start by saying I'm an avid camper and need the brightest light possible. I hate using coleman gas lanterns becaue a)i'm a little frightened by them and b)fire and tent don't mix I have been using this lantern for well over a year now after doing tons of research on lanterns. I have dropped this lantern with the lens off as well as on and have used it 100s of times from camping to doing work on my boat at night. Let me tell you this little lantern not only takes a beating from but lasts forever. It puts out super bright light without blinding you and is gentle on the 3d batteries it uses. Case and point last week I was cleaning my garage and left the light on in the basement and accidently left it there for a week after I had gone camping (missed it) and I got back a week later and it was still going after I had used it multiple times before. The only negative thing I have to say is it works better without the lens upside down for the most effective light and I also use it with a standard GE lantern I got from costco (non replaceable lens) to crate low light (ge) high light (rayovac). This light is awesome for emergencies and camping. Just as a proof on the effectiveness off longevity I use the cheap ass dollar tree D cells for batteries and they have lasted over a year. Lowes has these for cheap if you want one quick.
Customer Review: Well built and bright lantern Summary: 5 Stars
After reading all the positive reviews for this lantern, I decided to buy one for my first camping trip. When I took it out of the box, I was amazed at how small, compact and well-built it was...very solid and sturdy construction if you ask me.
First off let me cover the negatives that some of the other reviewers mentioned such as the battery change and bottom hook:
This lantern uses 3 D-cell batteries, and once you unscrew the bottom cover it's very easy to insert and install. Upon closing the cover again, all you have to do is match the arrows with each other, turn (close) the cover and it will snap into places locking it in. The bottom hook is made of plastic and one may think it would snap if hung upside down and crash and destroy the lantern - but that is not the case. The plastic is sturdy and will hold the lantern well without falling or breaking. The lantern is not that heavy, it's quite light.
I haven't tested the lantern for being waterproof/rainproof, but from the looks of it it should be. This will probably hold up well against any rain or storm. As for the lumens, I don't know how accurate this claims to be for 300 lumens....but WOW is it bright or what? I would highly recommend this to any first time campers, regular campers, or anyone who wants to stay prepared in case of a blackout.
Customer Review: Without question - Buy It! Summary: 5 Stars
This lantern provides great broad area lighting at 4 watts (3 watts is an error). Brightness is 300 lumens. Compare with avg. inexpensive flashlights (20 lumens) or expensive ones (110 lumens). It uses 3 (D) batteries versus the expensive CR123A lithiums (found in expensive flashlights). The battery life is 72 hrs (high) or 150 hrs. (low). Expensive flashlights run 4 hrs. at 107 lumens. Overall size is about 3-inches square and 6-inches tall, so I keep one in my toolbag. The arrows in the battery compartment are not supposed to be aligned. Instead, they point to the plastic pieces (in the lid and base) that are supposed to be aligned. Amazon did a great job of posting close-up photos of this.
The light is well-made, good quality, water-tight. Its lightweight made out of ABS plastic and rubber. The batteries provide greater stability, although not needed. The hangar hook is used to attach the light to the ceiling of a tent. Unscrew the light shade and the LED is super bright white. Hold the on/off button for 3 seconds and the lantern will strobe. After comparing a lot of flashlight specs I bought this lantern. At <$30 it paid for itself 2 hrs later when I had a job to finish at night. Just like other reviewers, I will buy more for me, friends and family. This is definitely a keeper!
