Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Xtreme 300-Lumen LED LanternCustomer Review: Difficult? Well, duh, no. Summary: 5 Stars
This little lantern is I think about as good as you could wish for the price. We tested it in our bedroom which is about 15' x 25'and it illuminates the entire room, not enough to read by, but enough to find something and not bump into anything. You could read by it easily, within a yard or two. Our camping days are behind us, but I'm sure that it would light up all but the largest tents and it has a hook on the bottom in case you wanted a "chandelier." Since this is an L.E.D. lantern, those bulbs draw almost no power, so the 3 D-cells are "advertised" to last 70 or so hours on "bright" and I have no doubt that will be the case.
A number of reviews complain about the difficulty of getting the batteries in and closing it up. Well, duh! I am as clumsy as they come, but it took me about a minute and a half to do that. You look at the pictures embossed in the inside to see how to place the batteries and at the stickers to see how to line it up if it isn't obvious to you. If you are the type who chug-a-lugs a six pack, put the lantern together first.
Customer Review: small but powerful Summary: 4 Stars
I have 5 kids, and a bad memory of burning myself on an old Coleman lantern as a child. So my "rule" was no propane or kerosene lantern when I take the kids camping. With that in mind I picked up this little beauty. I was a bit shocked that the actual size is smaller then what is pictured, but I took a chance. I am glad I took that chance... this little beauty is powerful! So I'll cut to the chase
Pro's
powerful and bright
compact
low energy consumption
sturdy (my son dropped if off the picnic table by accident)
Con's
battery compartment is tricky (see other reviews)
hanging hook is useless
blinking led "finder" light has no off switch
My father-in-law doubted it would be bright enough for our camp. It actually proved to be "too bright". Instead of being set on the table we set it on top of the van to light the surrounding camp (good 10ft circle). It was impressive enough that other campers asked us where we bought it, how much etc. For anyone backpacking this IS your lantern!
Customer Review: Very Impressed Summary: 5 Stars
I must say that I am quite impressed with what Rayovac has been able to do with this tiny lantern. When I first opened the box I was a little disappointed because the unit was so small but once I got the batteries in and turned it on I was more than impressed. This thing is by far the brightest LED lantern I have seen. It is at least 3 to 4 times brighter than my 24 LED AC Delco lantern that is twice the size. As far the locator light, I happen to like this function. It's nice to be able to quickly locate the lantern in the pitch black of the wild. It would be nice if it could be turned off though. But on the other hand, you should never store your electronics with the batteries inside them. The battery case is indeed a pain to close...until you learn its secret. Once you find out how the cover lines up with the two small pieces of plastic that stick out, it becomes a breeze to close. Now that I know just how good it works I will definitely be ordering a few more (but in all honesty I will probably wait to see if Rayovac fixes the locator light issue).
Customer Review: A highly versatile LED lantern Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit skeptical when I opened the box and saw the size of this lantern. It fooled me though because this is probably the best LED lantern I've ever seen. First of all, it's very bright. The switch allows two lighting levels plus a strobing light. Additionally with a bottom mounted hook and the ability to remove the diffuser top, you can effectively turn this into a hanging bare bulb lamp offering not only 360 degree lighting but downward light as well. The whole top just twists right off for this purpose. The whole unit is very sturdy feeling and well put together. The base and part of the top are rubberized to protect and for non-slip purposes. These will be great for emergency lighting for power outages.
I want to say again, this is a bright LED light.
The only negative thing I would have to say is the bottom battery cover was a little tricky to get back on. But if the battery life is good, then I won't need to go through this very often.
I'm getting ready to buy two more to keep in my RV camper!
Customer Review: Review of Rayovac SE3DLN Sportsman Extreme 300-Lumen LED Lantern Summary: 4 Stars
This lamp seems pretty durable and very bright for its size. It is a decent purchase for the price.
There are a few drawbacks to this lamp:
- The on/off button is a bit flaky sometimes and requires that you click it very quickly to switch between lighting modes. If you press a bit too slowly, it will not respond.
- The flashing green led on the unit will drain the batteries over time. I guess Rayovac was thinking this tells the user where the lamp is when it's dark. Perhaps they could have put a switch to allow the user to decide whether he/she wants that flashing led to function or not.
- With the 3D cells inside, this unit is not light. So ultra-light backpackers will probably not want this in their kit. This is more for the house or car camper.
- One final point is that the design could be made such that it shrinks in size - similar to the BD Orbit. I know it is a bigger lamp than the Black Diamond Orbit, but that lamp really impresses me for its size and portability.
