Tools and Hardware Reviews of Rayovac SP1W3AALN-B Sportsman 65-Lumens LED Mini Lantern With BatteriesCustomer Review: Emergency Lighting Summary: 1 Stars
Second paragraph added at later date. If buying for emergency lighting please read it.
I bought two of these lights for emergency purposes. I too fumbled a bit getting the batteries in, but once I realized you have to line the slots up it was easy. They put out a good amount of light and I like having two settings. The strobe works well.(should I ever need it) Lights were smaller then I had imagined but this is good for storage purposes and does not change the light output, so this is a good thing. One thing that does concern me is the small blinking green light, which is intended to help you find it in the dark. I am concerned that it may draw needed energy from the batteries and when the time comes to use the lights, will the batteries still be fully charged? I am giving these lights a 5 star rating and will assume that this feature will not shorten battery life.
Further research has confirmed that these green blinking LED lights do drain the battery. This really takes away from this product in my opinion, and more so for the emergency use I bought them for. This product takes quite a bit more effort to install the batteries then other items I own. To be honest I could not imagine doing this in the dark. In fact I bet it could not be done at all. One Reviewer for the larger D size, states he contacted manufacturer and they stated 32 day battery life while unit is off. For emergency lighting I would rate this product a zero. I have done as much hunting, fishing and camping as anyone, I also would not care for this unit for these purposes either due to blinking LED. I will now have to remove the batteries from my emergency lighting and buy different lighting, so I can see to put the batteries in these units, should I lose power or suffer some type of emergency at night.
If you are concerned about emergency survival, please consider the following items to have on hand:
Bottled Water
Battery lighting
Peanut Butter, a high source of protein and fat that requires no refrigeration. Canned foods
Swiss army knife
First aid Kit and book
Water purification tablets
Propane stove and propane
Fresh Batteries
Firearm and ammunition
Emergency Radio. Recommend the C Crane with Short wave. Short wave radio is what will be used should radio and TV go down. This will advise and keep you up to date. Avoid radios that look like survival equipment, generally they are not very good. Look at the features they offer and be prepared to spend a little money. Also, fresh batteries far exceed the value of a hand crank.
Batteries, water and canned foods should be rotated periodically to ensure freshness, we mark ours with a sharpie, with expiration date and store it. as it nears the date we put it in the pantry for normal use and replace it. This requires very little effort once you get started. There are also different types of freeze dried and survival foods you can buy. I prefer canned foods just for the reason we eat them before they expire. We buy stuff we like and will eat. I don't like freeze dried food, powdered eggs and such. If it's not a matter of life and death, I know we would never eat them. Should no emergency ever happen our food investment would be a waste of money. I am not an expert in survival by any means, but have done some research and this is what works for our family. I hope this helps somebody. Thanks for reading this!
