This device is extremely helpful for doing your own home energy audit. I used it to locate drafts around my doors and windows, ones I couldn't feel but the temp gun showed the huge temperature difference where the winter wind was coming in and my heat was going out. Compared to the cost of a professional home energy audit, this device is 1/10th the cost - granted you need to know what you're looking for, but a good book like the Home Energy Diet tells you what to look for. You can point it along the window sill and get immediate feedback where the temperature changes - showing you where the draft is. Same thing along your doorways. Also used it along my HVAC ducting to show those leaks. Very handy tool for getting your home less wasteful.Customer Review: One of the coolest little gadgets ever

This thing is excellent. You just point the laser beam at something and, instantly, you get that thing's surface temperature. In the last week I've used it to:
- test the temperature of my outboard motor engine to make sure the water pump is really working
- point it at the walls in my wine celler to see where the hot air is sneaking in so I know where to add insulation
- point it at the swimming pool to see what the water temperature is.
I wonder if it will tell human temperature....(it's dangerous to point it at eyeballs).
Besides actually useful things adults can use it for, my son grabbed it and has had fun pointing it at the stove burner, his frying bacon, scrambled eggs,.....

I've had this thermometer for over a year and have recommended to many friends!
If you like black and blue rare steaks, you need one of these and a cast iron skillet with groves. You can accurately (enough) tell when your cooking surfaces are a the temp you want. For 1.25" tenderloin steaks, 490+deg (close to 500 but NOT over!!!) 1 min, rotate 30deg for lines, flip at 2 minutes, done in two more minutes, total of 4 minutes. Rest for 5 minutes. Medium rare same temp flip at 4 minutes, done at 8. You can't get that searing on a gas or charcoal grill without warming the center. We use it for fried eggs, playing with the cat, meat and salads outside for parties, etc.

The Raytek MT4 Mini Temp Non-Contact Thermometer Gun with Laser Sighting is the handiest infrared thermometer we have found. After trying several other brands over the past few years, we have found the Raytek to provide results closest to insertion thermometers. We primarily use three of these in our candle making business, but also have two for around the house and in the kitchen. Here are my observations:
* Easy to use and aim with laser targeting (literally point and click)
* Solid design takes a good bit abuse
* Very accurate but takes surface temperature, so liquids should be stirred before reading

There is not a lot to say about the Raytek. It does exactly what they say. It quickly displays the temperature and is great for scanning a surface looking for temperature variation. Wife is not pleased that I have tested the temp on everything I could find for the 1st day we had it. But then found it useful in pointing out where the air leaks are in our kitchen so I can go put more insulation under the house!
I am very pleased and would recommend it to anyone. Only warning is read the directions. There appears to be variation on the temp accuracy depending on how far away from the target. Not a big deal, but something to be aware of.
