Tools and Hardware Reviews of Reliance Controls THP205 Sump Pump Alarm and Flood AlertCustomer Review: Inexpensive but Seems to Work Well Summary: 4 Stars
It's difficult to review a product you hope you never need to use. However, due to some significant water in an unepected area of my basement I bought two of these alarms to supplment the one existing sensor that is tied to the monitored house alarm system. Installation was a snap--just a few minutes for both. I tested each by putting the moisture-sensing prongs in a very shallow dish of water, and both emitted a piercing sound that was audible upstairs. (There's also a more delicate "musical" option which had a limited range.) If my new gutters and other minor changes to my landscaping work, I hope never to hear the alarms again. But I have made a note in my PDA to check the batteries every six months and to test them when I do. For $13 each, these seem like cheap insurance and are highly suited for those lower areas of a basement where flooding could happen but is least likely. For the riskiest areas, if any, I would recommend an alarm tied to a monitored alarm system as floods or broken pipes can happen during your absence. Overall, this is a good product:.Reliance Controls THP205 Sump Pump Alarm and Flood Alert.
Customer Review: Great alarm for laundry room sink Summary: 5 Stars
Our laundry room utility sink where the washing machine drains sometimes gets blocked and floods - always from something goofy, like the baby's sock drains out of the washer and plugs the sink. I bought this alarm on a lark and set it on the soap holder, with the sensor hanging about 6 inches down into the sink. I was worried about false alarms from the splashing of the water, but no problems at all, and we do sometime use the sink for things. There the alarm sat for 6 months. Then one night a couple weeks ago, we heard very loud classical music - we were in the other end of the house, probably 50 feet away, and it kind of freaked us out. I had no idea what it was but followed the music and found the sink with water about 2 inches from the top. I got it unplugged (stuffing from a pillow that was in the washer...) and not a drop was spilled. It was so loud that it woke up our 4 year old, who loved the music. He asked us to play it again.
Customer Review: it works! Summary: 5 Stars
My city has a sewer problem, when we get heavy rains, it backs up into my basement. I bought two heavy duty dirty water pumps from amazon, but I need a way to know when to haul it down to my basement to plug them in to minimize the amount of sewage coming into my house. This alarm is the bee's knees. I have it mounted on the wall and then duct taped the cord to the concrete floor so that it dangles down into my floor drain, that way it doesn't kicked out or become a cat toy.
I was sound asleep last night at 2:30 in the morning when the water started to back up. I heard it over 2 fans and a window AC unit. If you are a heavy sleeper or concerned you would not hear it, I use a baby monitor for extra insurance that I will hear the alarm, it happened to be off last night and I heard the alarm anyway.
Customer Review: Get One If You Have A Sump Pump Summary: 5 Stars
If you've ever had your sump pump fail and you have a finished basement, you know what problems and expenses ensue. What a mess!!!
The Reliance Controls Sump Pump Alarm and Flood Alert #THP205 is a simple device with a probe that sticks to the side of your sump basket. When the water level reaches the point beyond where your sump pump would ordinarily start to pump, the Flood Alert gives off a loud warning signal. Two days after I installed the Flood Alert, the float ball that triggers the on switch on my sump pump got stuck under the edge of the drain tile; the water rise and would have overrun the sump basket, but the Flood Alert began screaming and I adjusted the position of the sump pump before any water rose above the sump basket.
Customer Review: Works but be aware of the placement Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this to identify if a crock pump fails and the water rises. If this is placed in a sealed or near sealed vessel such as a crock or sump pit, condensation will make this have false alarms. I was able to drop this into a floor drain, as if the crock I'm monitoring stops, the water will rise past the trap and fill the drain. I have it a few inches below flor level so I can catch it before there's a mess. Since the drain is open on the top this sensor works fine as condensation does build but not enough to set it off. The cord on the sensor is about 3 feet long so it works nice in this application. The sound is not extremely loud but fair. Overall it is doing the job and I haven't seen anything similar that is better...
