The calabash is an ancient symbol of health and healing. Medicines were once stored in the dried and hollowed out gourds. To this day in Asia they carry the connotation of relief from suffering, which is why they also have a close association with Buddhism. The eight fold path of the Buddha is thought to eliminate suffering and lead one to enlightenment. In Chinese and Japanese traditions the Buddha is often depicted carrying a calabash as a emblem of the religion and philosophy's power to heal. These miniature hand carved calabash ornaments have a tiny secret scroll hidden inside. The bottom unscrews to revel the scroll, an ancient Buddhist text written in tiny Chinese characters.
